Hello!

Well I am at a stage in my life where I am considering PC gaming as I spend a lot of time on my laptop and not so much on the xbox 360/ dreamcast etc, so im thinking about consolidating them for a gaming pc. I can use it as an emulator for the saturn/psx/n64/dreamcast/ps2/xbox/gb/wii etc as well as all of the fantastic games there are on a pc..

1- Is it really worth it? I know there is a lot of faffing about installing/ setting up controllers and graphics options but are the games actually better?

2- I would need a well spec set up to make it future proof for a little while (yes i know the world of PCs are developing faster than a young girls ****) and would not want to spend more than £1000. Anyone have any suggestions on a good set up?

This is what a trial spec i have come up with. Your thoughts?

I would definitely definitely swap out the Geforce 430s, I mean I'm not a scratch on the other guys here in terms of knowledge, but I do know that with a £1000 budget you definitely should not be going for those. They have rather poor performance. There are some pretty awesome deals up in the ocuk store, and I'd recommend at least a gtx 460, or even higher, your budget certainly allows it.

If you dont want to get your hands dirty and build the rig yourself, then maybe a pre built system like the "Titan Triceratop" would be your cup of tea. Select win7 64 premium, and next day shipping and you're at the £1k mark.

A 2500k, 4gb and a gtx460 would be more than enough for general gaming and emulation.

if you're going for £1000 budget you could have an awsome machine with tri-channel memory yet you have gone for dual channel, any particular reason?

here's the sytem i'm starting to build, currently it's on hold till next month due to funds but the point is i'll be game ready and anything i wish to do on the comp --- Tho i did leave out the DVD writer/reader as i'm still unsure whether to save for blueray/dvd writer, i'll also be getting the V8 coolermaster cpu cooler eventually so that i can overclock nicely whilest still running silent... The ati 6950 gcard can also be flashed to make it a 6970

Welcome to the world of PC gaming!

As far as installing stuff, and setting up drivers, it really is minimal in terms of fuss these days. ATI/Nvidia have graphics drivers on their website and they're updated regularly. If you use Steam for games, you never even have to install or patch anything.

For £1000, you can get an incredible PC. Check out Overclockers pre built systems. You should be looking at least at quad core i5/i7, 4 or 8 GB Ram, 1TB Hdd, Solid State Drive for Win7, etc.

As was said earlier, avoid the GT430 if you plan on gaming - its more of a HTPC card. Make sure it's at least a £150 card otherwise you'll be selling yourself short in a £1000 system.

All the specs are for sandybridge i5's which use dual channel so why would he need a tri-channel memory kit?

exactly, why go for an i5? dual channel is gettin pretty dated and games are the 1 thing that many home users are finding to be the high end users of machines today, so why aim for a machine thats just going to last a few game interests that are starting to get left in the past rather than aiming for the games that will be released this year not 3 years ago?

if you go for just duel channel memory in a high end gaming machine there will be a bit of bottlenecking going on somewhere down the line with the cpu's that are available, save money in the long run and make it future proof, get a tripple channel memory motherboard and then build around that, it'll save you spending another £1000 in a years time just to play the game that is around the corner that you end up having your eyes on playing only to be let down cos you'll find your machine only just handles it

The reason to go for an i5 sandybridge is it will wipe the floor with an i7 950? Dual channel memory wont bottleneck the system just get 8gb if you really feel its needed.

OP i think i know where you got that rough spec from and i would really advise you look at that companies reviews for customer service and warrenty.

If you dont want to build yourself get something like this.

This was Zebedeee's post when I responded so my post was right then... there was no mention of his i7 1366 setup. Also Sandybridge i5's are quad core, i7's are quad core with hyperthreading and very nice too, seeing as I'm personally running the i7 2600k with 8Gb of that slow dual channel memory ;).

you don't necessarily need tri-channel memory, tho thats the direction gaming is heading, i can't gaurentee what the specs needed for the next year will be for gaming, but in my oppinion thats where gaming is now in comparrison to consoles. and if you want to be future prooof for the next 2 years then i'd get tri-channel
