Hey Guys, new too the forum.

I'll try keep it simple, about a year'n'half ago I built myself a new system:

Corsair obsidian 800d case
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3Ghz Black Edition (Water cooled with XSPC, cant seem to overclock it passed 3.7)
ATI Radeon HD 6950 (PowerColor PCS+ HD6950 2GB GDDR5(Vortex II Edition) - Stock
OCZ 60GB Vertex 2E SSD 2.5" SATA-II (OS)
Seagate 500GB Momentus XT 2.5" Hybrid SSD/HDD SATA-II 7200rpm (games)
Gigabyte GA-MA790XTA-UD4 790X AM3 7.1 Channel HD Audio SATA ATX Motherboard
Corsair 850W HX Modular PSU
Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2), Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 memory module 1600Hz
Benq G2420HD Full HD TFT LCD 24" HDMI Monitor

I build this system for one reason. Games. I have a second pc for the other bits and bobs.

I've recently found that when playing new games like Crysis 3, Tomb Raider and Metro Lastlight, I have started to struggle a bit on the high end settings and I'm having to bring them down to get some smooth game play.

Ive thought about upgrading the motherboard to an asus crosshair v formula-z and upgrading the CPU to the Amd Piledriver FX-8350. Also maybe investing in a new HD Radeon 7970 but I thought maybe I should wait for the HD 8000 series. But im not sure on what is holding my computer back the most at the moment and what I should look to upgrade first.

The advice I'm seeking is what do you guys recommend I upgrade to improve my gaming experience first as I'm not totally sure?

Thanks in advance

Toby

Welcome to the Forum!

What is your budget?

It would seem you could re-use most of your components and I would recommend this

YOUR BASKET
1 x KFA2 Geforce GTX 770 EX OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (77XPH6DV6KXZ) £299.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail with FREE Grid 2 PC Game £194.99
1 x Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7PD256BW) £187.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-D3H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £131.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan GOLD 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLYD38G2133HC11ADC01) £64
Total : £890.35 (includes shipping : £9.50).

I have added new RAM as Haswell like fast RAM. You could then sell your old stuff to make some money back. I have also added the 770, but the 7970 is not far off the same price, give or take £30. You also have the option for SLI/xFire with this motherboard too.

Hey Snips thanks for the reply,
My budget isnt great, which is why I'm trying to upgrade bits at a time. Im very much an AMD fan, not really sure why but i tend to go with them. Plus for this build if I was to switch to Intel I would also then have to change my waterblock.

At the moment i could at a push go for the 7970, but that's why i was wondering if its worth waiting for the 8000 series. Could definitely afford a MOBO upgrade or CPU upgrade. I was leaning towards to mobo as i believe that's what was stopping me getting passed 3.7Ghz on my current CPU when ive heard people have been easily getting 4.2Ghz

Thanks again
