Hey all

My brothers E8500 and 4870 are now in dire need of replacement
Since I built the first one I'm happy to use the antec 300, psu, optical, hdd ect

Planning to change the rest with:

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 WindForce 3x OC Rev2 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **Black PCB** £179.99

Retail Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £169.99

Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-14900C10 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/Red (HX18C10BRK2/16-OC) £119.99

Asus P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £85.99

He games at 1080p, I have a 2500k, so familiarity is why im staying with intel, as far as I read the performance difference in most games between a 2000/3000/4000 intel K is about 5-8%.

What I would like to know is:

What is the best cooler to get with this (will change the cpu to OEM when orderin ;) ) for overclocking that fits in an antec 300
Is this combo (mobo ram cpu) going to clock well (aka 4ghz+, not greedy anything stable above 4)

Budget is £600 with a flex for logical best performance gains within a price step :)

There's no point really going for the 3570k. Get what you can, Haswell/Devil's Canyon is what you want :D
Why 16GB RAM? 8GB is more than enough for gaming

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £173.99
1 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 280 WindForce 3X OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £169.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £79.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
1 x Raijintek Aidos Direct Contact CPU Cooler £14.99
Total : £604.94 (includes shipping : ).

What PSU do you have?

Free headset with the mobo can be sold for around £30.

Got a nice 240GB SSD as well.

OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply
Not sure if its compatable with haswell

I like the look of your suggestions, I was going to look for a good SSD as well :)

Can save a bit of money on this kit, which has fast RAM, i5-4670K (Retail), while still getting a good mobo. But if you'd like a free headset I'd go for the Gigabyte which Shivy specced, which is more or less on a par with the MSI Z97 Gaming 5:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Intel Core i5 DIY ATX Motherboard Upgrade Kit £329.93

For cooler, any under 170mm height will fit in the Antec 300. The number of heatpipes and heatpipe thickness (i.e. 8 x 6mm pipes is more or less the same as 6 x 8mm pipes), is usually a good indicator of how good the cooler is, barring rare exceptions. And check reviews/comparison charts.

Don't get RAM with tall heatsinks, that will avoid any clearance issues.

Did a check on your OCZ PSU. It has dual 12v rails of 18 amps each. It can output 36 amps (432W) using both, but can only output a maximum 30 amps on either at the same time. This means that if your GPU requires 30 amps on one rail, the other rail will only produce 6 amps for the CPU (and other bits). In practice, what's likely to happen is that it will keep providing the CPU with enough power but your GPU might not receive enough, in certain situations. This isn't an ideal situation for i5-4670K+ 280/280X and overclocking. You could risk it, and give it a try, but I would recommend getting a new PSU for the new rig, especially if the OCZ has a few years on it already.

If you intend to keep it, the GTX 760 would probably be a better bet. It's a pity, because the 280/280X is better. As above, I'd just upgrade to a modern PSU. My feeling is that with i5-4670K + 280/280X, that OCZ is gonna go boom sooner rather than later, and could take other components out.
