Hey,

I really like the idea of investing in the 1055t. However, in gaming terms will the hexcore be worth it just now?

If games dont use the six cores and wont do in the near furure is it any use in getting it at this moment in time.

The AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 970 Black Edition "140W Edition" 3.50GHz should deal with games for quite some time shouldnt it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well theres loads of life in quads yet around (4 years )
but if you thinking of a 970 then for a tenner more you can get the hex core!;)

id say get a 955 and put the exta £43 to a better Gpu

Sorry I meant the 955 Quad core. The price difference isnt that great with the 970 and the 1055T so if i was comparing them two I may as well just go for the hex because there is only a few pounds in it. Hadnt I? lol

Yea it will do fine, buy to the size of your budget or to the size of your epeen, assuming gamer devs start exploiting the cpu more, for ancilliary real time calcuations, which is becoming more and more common, then more cores will help as these workloads will all be threaded, But six cores at 3.5ghz with headroom to overclock to 4.2ish means you'll be set for at least 3 years before you can ever call your tech obsolete, dated by a year and a half perhaps :O)

Yeh if ime only really using the cpu for gaming then I may as well save my money, regardless of how little I save, and go for the quad core. Makes perfect sense now thanks guys :D

I agree with what folks are saying here, im gonna go for the 955 on my build much as i wish my budget would allow a 6 core black edition purely for epeen reasons :). That said tho, and please correct me if im mistaken, the turbocore feature might give you better performance on a hex core. If i understand it correctly you get a substantial performance boost if you use half the cores or less so on a quad thats 2 cores for your boost but on a hex you can use up to 3 and get the boost.

@Gantoris - That is correct. I don't know about the 1055 but mine runs as standard at 3.2 Ghz per core but if the turbo boost comes in it goes to a 3 core @ 3.6ghz. As for better performance, I don't know really whether you would notice too much difference between 3.2Ghz and 3.6Ghz. I don't know about other games, but from playing F1 2010 it causes a skip as it goes between normal use and turbo core and back so have had to turn it off while playing F1.

+1

Some reviews even show almost no improvements in gaming at present after going from x3 to x4's. The big jump is from x2 to X3

Yep....3 cores is the current sweet spot for price/performance.From what i've seen of benchmarks, 3 cores will usually give 80-90% of the performance of 4 cores in gaming....

Thank you Xbox 360....:) or  Depending on your point of view....

Great link robskinner. The 955 is apparently one of the best bang for buck quad cores you can get. Ile be ticking that one on my list :D
