My friend wants a computer specing and he has £1000 to spend. He needs everything except sound peripherals.

He is very picky, he wants the 4890 and would like a q6600 or amd quad and I have talked him into getting an i7 if its within his budget and the asus p6t (I think this is too expensive tbh)

Open to all opinions and setups though.

Many thanks in advanced

think youre right i7 will be too much incl monitor etc, just to clarify does he need OS?
Assuming he does Ive come up with this, havent included mouse/kb as thats very much a personal thing but Ive left room for him to include, if he doesnt need OS then spend the extra on a 24" monitor
Ive gone for the quad core CPU (as this is what you stated) though another option would be the tricore 720BE

Gone for the AM3 route as imo no one should be basing a system on socket 775 atm unless theyre really stubborn, theres no upgrade path due to no further development, the AM3 is a new socket and is more likely to offer future upgradability

If you go for an intel quad, go for the Q6700 over the 6600, faster, newer and cheaper. Agree with above, going i7 will seriously limit the options for a decent monitor. Plus if it's for gaming, i7 doesn't really show any improvement over a decent amd or older intel setup, especially for the extra cost.

Good spec thrifty, but why did you choose the Phenom 810? For £4 more you could have got the 920, which has a faster clock, more cache.

Or you could push the boat out and make it a few pounds over a £1000 and get the Phenom 940 Black Edition.

It would be worth it pushing for the 940 BE, these are fantastic CPU's, overclock like mad, especially with the unlocked multiplier. It does mean going AM2+ rather than the AM3 setup, but the AM2+ motherboards will support AM3 CPU's, so further down the line it should support a new CPU, if he feels the neeed to upgrade. All you have to change is the motherboard and the ram. Another option is the AM3 X3 720BE, it's a tri core CPU, but shows great performance in gaming, has the newer AM3 tech and is cheaper than the quads.

Does he need a mouse and keyboard? If he does, seriously drop the 4890 for a 4870, it's only slightly slower and will save over £40. Put that towards a decent gaming mouse and keyboard.

I did offer the tricore as alternative, first post, tbh its what I would go for but he stated quad quite adamantly, dint go for 920/940BE as kept it AM3 as opposed to AM2
