Erm yes... this is another one of those help needed posts and before anyone comments to my detriment I have read countless posts and still feel none the wiser in my case and sometimes it takes the advice of others to get one going in the right direction. ;)

So I need a wee bit of advice from all you seasoned system builders please...

Looking to building a gaming rig that will be good for about the next 18 months before I upgrade again. OS will be Vista64 ultimate (as I already have this).

What I currently have that will be reused is:
  • Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB
  • Coolermaster Real Power 1000w PSU
  • Tuniq Tower 120
  • X-Fi Extreme Gamer Fatal1ty Pro
  • Logitech G9
  • oh and my cube case.

So basically what I will be requiring is a MB, RAM, CPU & Graphics Card.

I am thinking about either going 9800GTX SLI or GX2 until the next gen graphics cards come out. I could wait until Q3 but then again will they def be out then or be delayed? Question is which would be the best to get? I do all my gaming on a 24” Dell @ 1920x1200.

CPU wise I am thinking more along the lines of an E8500 or maybe a Q9550? Which would be best for gaming and the usual word processing/photo editing, etc?

Will also be looking for 8GB RAM (preferably DDR2 as I don’t see the benefit of using DDR3 yet)

And finally, what would be the best motherboard to accommodate all of this? Not much to ask but I am sure someone out there can offer some sound advice. Oh, I am not a serious oc’er but I do tamper a little bit. What say ye?

have a look at the Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38 mobo, couple of mates have it and seem pretty happy with it.

either of those gfx cards will be fine running on a 24" screen, single 9800GTX would do the job, would go for the x2 over sli.

cpu wise 8400/9450 clock well so i'd go with one of those, 9450 would be my preference if you use heavy apps out side of gaming.

memory wise have a look at the G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PQ PC2-8000C5 (2x2GB).

Many thanks for your response. That has helped. :)

Never thought about the 9450. Would only be using air for o/c so what would I be looking at speed wise for an o/c with this chip?

Never used G.Skill memory before and see that it has got some good reviews there. Looks good.

MB looks good and I must say that I do prefer Asus. Added to the shopping list.

Now just got to decided whether I want to go SLI or GX2 for the time being. :(

Don't go with sli, not really seen any decent comments about it performing as well as it should.

the 9800GTX, like the 8800GTX before it will be able to run at you're res for pretty much everything, crysis etc withholding, on high setttings.

edit:
only seen rough details of overclocks for the 9450 and its around the 3.8 area, not seen any of the usual stability pics as yet.
