gaming rig under £550

Here is a spec I threw together. If you want to use the PC for playing games then this is better option.

The PSU I picked is very high quality and powerful. It will allow you to add a second graphics card in Crossfire in the future. If you have no wish to upgrade further then something like this will do the job fine.

If you want the PC for CPU intensive applications, then a quad core CPU like this is a good option. Just drop the graphics card down to something like this to keep it in budget.

The tri core has one disabled core. If you're lucky (i think that motherboard has the capability to do this) you might be able to unlock it. If not, it's still a pretty good chip to boot.

Either this:

Should do you fine.

cmndr_andi spec is on the button.

I personally would try to get a 4890 sapphire vapour-x & a coolermaster 690 & maybe swap the ram out for some corsair but am a fan boy :P

Also the PCP&C is the best psu for the money & will allow you to crossfire in future.

the only reasons why I would consider a PS3 are..
-to play PS3 exclusive games (which doesn't warrant the PS3's cost, so no,I wouldn't buy one for this reason.)
-doubles as a blu-ray player (better bang/buck for home cinema system really :p)
-play games a lot with drunken people after being at a party

I guess thats about it...
but tbh, I'd prefer an xbox 360 because you get so much more for your money.

I suppose if you really want to play PS3 exclusive games - then it does make some sense (but personally there are none that I give two ***** about). I agree about the blu-ray player point, I hear that many reviewers used PS3s as their reference BD Players - so they are clearly very good for that.

As to your final point - for many years after a night out me and all of my mates played the wonder that is "drunk BF2" on the PC. We found we played far better drunk than sober and some of the most fun I have ever had on any gaming system.

As for the XB360 - aye its cheap. However, all the good games get ported to the PC (generally very well) and then cost less.

The only thing that actually temps me to get an XBOX 360 is splintercell convinction :(
still don't know if they'll release it on PC..
played all splintercell games on PC, and loved them all !!

Edit: just a quick search on google said UBISOFT HAS CONFIRMED THAT THEY WILL RELEASE IT FOR PC :D
Yay !!! have a look at the gameplay trailer :p It looks really sweet :)

anyways, back to topic..
I think andi's first suggestion for a 550 rig is best bang/buck you can get. Phenom + 4890... you can't get any better than that for 550 really..
