Hi, need help……
Looking to spend around the £1000 mark on a new system, including monitor.

Thought my mind was made up on AMD dual core but not so sure now…

Is the new Intel that much better, will I be getting more for my money if I stay with the AMD option?

Was going to base a rig around a
Gainward graphics card something like the 7900gt 512mb (£260)

On an Asus A8 N32-sli mother board (£100)

With a Amd 64 x2 Dual core 4400 1mb (£160)

Using 2gb Corsair RAM (£180)

Although iv been gaming for some year’s im a bit of a noob when it comes to this side of things, (see last thread). Been using an old system, probably from the Stone Age.
I would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks…

from all that i have heard\read, go with the Conroe chip...

edit and i believe you will be getting less for your money with the AMD (sadly...)

Definitely go Conroe, they are spanking AMD at the moment, and maybe get a 7900GT/GS as DX10 is around the corner, but theres my opinion

Not sure if you need case, drives etc but for that budget I would be tempted to base it around:

MB-062-GI Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-062-GI)
£104.99 £104.99
CP-128-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN)
£191.99 £191.99
MY-072-OC OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) (MY-072-OC)
£159.99 £159.99
GX-047-CO Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (3056) (GX-047-CO)
£189.99 £189.99
Subtotal £646.96
VAT £113.22
Total £760.18

That said if your not after overclocking you could get an Asrock motherboard and save another £50, or you could get a E6300 and overclock it up and save £90.

Hope it helps a little, would definately go Core2Duo atm though.

Another system......

So, looked around a bit and I like what I see regarding the Conroe cpu.

Checked out the ‘Velocity’ systems and thought about putting together something similar.

Mobo: Asus P5N 32-sli se deluxe (£136)

Cpu: Intel core duo E6600 4mb (£237)

G/C: Gainward 7900 bliss (£269)

Ram: Corsair 2x1gb (£150)

H/D: Hitachi deskstar T7K 250gb (£53)

Case: X-cruiser mid-tower 420w (£56)

Optical drive: ????? (£35)

Grand Total: £936

Any opinions?
Any obvious problems with the set up?
Any way of cutting the cost without loosing too much performance?

Only going with the one G/C for now, will go SLI in a few months.
I would have liked to keep it under £1000 with a decent monitor….

Again, any help will be appreciated…

Pajeh, similar to the system you have suggested….
I like the Asus boards and the gainward cards though, seem to have a lot of good reviews..
Also couldn’t find the same price on the Conroe E6600? I must be looking in the wrong places….
Cheers, Jagan..
