Anything you would change in the following spec? -

I already have a 22" TFT, decent speakers, headset, keyboard so it's just the base unit I need. Already got 1 of the 4850's and fancy trying out Xfire.

Had one before and quite like them, mine died after 18months though, using a basic mouse atm so thought I'd give one another try :)

What about the PSU? Good choice or go for the Thermaltake 1200w?

I'm going to hold off ordering untill the 4870x2's come in stock, may sell my 4850 and go for one of those instead.

Would like to make it as future proof as possible really - may go for 4870x2 crossfire down the line!

Well if you want to future proof it why not hold off a few months and get one of the new intel chips coming out, as no doubt they will be around 18 months or so before a new one

How long you're intending to keep "basic" components (CPU/mobo) and are you much into heavy overclocking of everything?

And in normal home uses 1TB Samsung F1 and WD Caviar Black are practically equal to Raptors so I don't see benefit in paying that much more for much smaller capacity.

Fancy having a play around with xfire and a wolfdale chip but board won't support either at the moment, also needed some more HD space and want to change my case so thinking about just going all out and ordering everything. PSU is the main thing I want to future proof so dont mind spending a decent amount on one.

Not too bothered about keeping the basic components, I change those quite often - cpu/board/ram etc, just want the main bits to last (Case, PSU, HD's etc) I've got a 74GB raptor now which I keep running out of space on hence the 300GB raptor and also my 500GB backup drive is full hence the 1TB drive. I really notice the difference with the raptor over fast 7200rpm drives so want to keep with one, even though they are pricey.

edit - and yeah will be overclocking as far as I can, cpu, ram, gfx card! Defently going to wait untill tuesday and see what happens with the 4870x2...

Run two of these in RAID0 (£90 less / faster / far quieter).

Would they be quicker in RAID0 than the raptor then? Never ran a RAID setup before but I know my raptor is far far quicker than any 7200rpm drive I've tried...

crap access time tho so loading into games will be pants and it only just beats a single raptor

Yeah it's the loading times which I notice the most, Windows booting and loading games in general is a lot faster on the raptor.

Also, does anyone know if the Asus X38 board will fit a TRUE cooler?

id seriously reconsider the velociRaptor.

far too expensive and if the normal Raptors are anything to go by, will be the loudest thing in ** case no matter how you try to dampen the sound.

- the veloci = 2 x 4870's instead of the 4850's.

if you really want the speed of the raptor why not buy a smaller one? then use a cheaper one for storage etc (which you have done already i see)

just what i would do^

edit: would also make use of the 1000w psu which is overkill for ** setup atm:)

il believe that when i hear it!!:)

still...my point still stands. i mean what would you rather? 2 x 4870's? or a way overpriced HD that may bre good...but there are cheaper alternatives.
