i'm after some advice from all of you who are more clued up on this than i am.

I've got Virgin Broadband and have put this into modem mode and linked to my Netgear WNDR3800 router as i was wanting a better wi-fi range and more control over features (such as QOS).

Occasionally the 2.4ghz signal drops, thus ruining my sons gaming. 5ghz always appears fine.
So i'm assuming my old router is probably on it's way out.
Also the wireless range that i was hoping for hasn't happened. My sons PS4 is roughly 8m away yet is only receiving a signal strength of 76%. And speeds between 3mbps and 8mbps.

So i have been looking at the NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 @ £119. Reviews appear good but is it the best for this price range?

Regarding Powerline adapters i have some 2nd hand BT Wifi range extenders. They don't have GB connections and also they occasionally lose sync with each other so we are constantly pairing them.

What kind of adapters should i swap these put for. Need to be passthrough and have wi-fi capability for in my 2nd sons room as he hardly receives any wifi signal. Old house. thick walls etc.

any help would be appreciated

Forget power line stuff and wire in as much as possible directly. You can route cables around rooms and doors - the max cable length is 100 metres, which is plenty for a home.

Seriously, I have found no need to redecorate or anything. I just route the cables around walls and doors and it passes without notice.

Trouble with routing wires for my lads bedroom is the distance and logistical nightmare of going around walls and doors.
I can't see it being a possibility tbh.

as for the router. any advice on this
