Hi all,

Sky have just emailed me about a price rise and stated I can leave because of this if I wish. I'm looking to join freeola for a month or two as virgin fibre is currently being installed around my village and I will be swapping to them as soon as its ready, so in the mean time I'm in the need of a decent gaming router. Can anybody recommend a cheap one please?

When I say gaming router I mean one that won't cause hassle when trying to get an open Nat, easy to forward ports etc... When gaming on my console.

I’ve used Asus routers for years now and they’ve worked out of the box for any sort of gaming.

If you like buying over priced products from a company with a horrible track record of selling broken hardware, has multiple consecutive generations of hardware where the AP/switch dies, only fixed known security issues years later because a retail partner refused to stock them if they didn’t and decided regulatory certification was OK to fake, then I suppose ASUS is the logical choice.

Op - is this a want or a need? I ask because what you are asking for is pretty much what any ISP supplied router is capable of, the only obvious exceptions are things like carrier grade or double NAT environments. By all means if you want something different for the sake of it, lots of us use anything from 3rd party SoC based routers up to current gen PC’s/VM’s with dedicated Linux/BSD distro’s specifically designed for the job - whatever that is. This seems like you may be trying to buy a cheap solution to a problem that is unlikely to exist.

@Avalon makes a good point. What do you currently use with Sky? If it’s their own router then whichever ISP you go with isn’t going to provide anything that is worse for gaming than you currently have and if you’ve a 3rd party one then you can probably still use it with your new ISP. At the very least see what arrives and give it a go before spending your hard earned on something marketing snake oil when in reality all you’re paying for is something similar whose only difference is it happens to look like a stealth fighter bomber.

Freeola fibre doesn't come with a free router so I have to either buy one that they have on offer or source one from elsewhere, otherwise I would have happily taken a free router.

I was just checking to see if any old fibre router is fine or if I need to spend a little more to save myself any hassle when it comes to upnp and nats etc...

For a router to be a router, it has to do NAT. UPNP isn't an absolute requirement, but it's pretty close. Very good reasons not to use ISP supplied routers such as the one VM will give you, but UPNP/NAT aren't on the list. If you just want a cheap router, tell us how much you want to spend and you'll get recommendations, but if you have something that isn't ISP locked leftover from a previous ISP it's likely to tide you over for the few months till you move to VM.

The only router I have is the one you get wish sky. I just want a basic no thrills router than won't give me any Nat issues. I don't really have a budget, just as cheap as possible for what I want.
