Gaming server, Pentium D or dual core?

I'm looking into purchasing a server and have the option for a Pentium D, the cheaper option and a Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz. I'm thinking that the C2D is probably a better option but I was just wondering what kind of performance difference I might see with a Pentium D compared with the C2D. Both will be running with 2GB of RAM.

Cheers.

What is the speed of that Pentium D?

I ran some tests before and a Pentium D (945 preslar) at 4.25Ghz is still a lot slower than either E2140 or E4300 I had at 3.1Ghz in most tests. But still quite a bit faster than an E2180 at stock 2Ghz.

get the c2duo if you can.we own our own box used to have a 64oo in it(now got a quad and 4gb ram).was fine with two to three busy game types on.dont forget a good host is almost as important as the box spec.

I was running a 16 player cod4 server on a 3800 X2 with 2Gb ram and it was fine. I would have thought that any dual core would be enough.

Depends... if its a hyperthreading Pentium D (single core) running around 3gig then you can run roughly:

6-10x 16 player Quake 3 Servers (depending on mod)
OR
3x 18 player W:ET Servers
OR
1x 24 player ETQW Server

If its a dual core Pentium-D then you can add about 50-60% onto those numbers.

Whereas even a 2gig core 2 duo could handle more than double that fine...

so end of the day it depends on what your planning on running - if its just 1-2 servers then a Pentium-D should handle it fine.

dont know much bout servers but definetly all the pentium Ds are dual core :)
I would go with c2d, the price diference shouldnt be much and its definetly worth the extra.

Yeah, all Pentium D's are dual core (although the Extreme Editions had hyperthreading - 4 threads!), I think what the thread title was getting at was a Pentium Dual Core E2000 processor.
