Looking at putting together a gaming spec PC with monitor for £1,400.

Can you recommend a decent spec? I already have Windows 10 license available for this build.

Thanks for the help all :)

Ryzen based with gtx 1070 and G-sync screen

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,400.84 (includes shipping: £0.00)

Intel + gtx 1070 - tad over.

Coffeelake is now 4 cores like old i5 and is basically a match for i5 7600k which Ryzen 1600 competes against

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,450.83 (includes shipping: £0.00)

Have a different spec in mind?
basically similar to @orbitalwalsh 's amd spec
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,423.73 (includes shipping: £15.90)

difference is that i opted for a standard 144hz screen without g-sync.
with that compromise, the difference in specs are a 1070ti (instead of 1070), 16gb ram (instead of 8gb) and a 1tb hdd for storage in the pc
the 1070ti would be able to drive a 144hz screen pretty well to forgo the need for g-sync (at least for the next few years i suspect :p)
you also get free shipping, so the total cost is less than a tenner overbudget (just a couple pints less at the bar lol)

what about AMD GFX with a Freesync monitor?
nah, amd aren't competitive at the high end. the rx580 is nowhere close in performance to the 1070, much less a 1070ti
and the vega56 is loltastic price-wise

@orbitalwalsh - what about AMD GFX with a Freesync monitor? Could then stretch to 16gb of outrageously expensive memory.

As an aside have you finished that build/project?

True, just a shame Vega 56 are so expensive !!!! would have been perfect with that £200 1440p screen if they were still £400-50 odd :/
Actually... £30 cheaper

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £771.08 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Yes, really need to post up final results. Also found out i5 8400 tops out with overclocked ram at 3600hz . Was using 8 Pack 3200hz and dropping timings as well as voltage to get to 3800 but didn't work. Kit did 4000+ with my 8700k . Guessing a is the IMC , maybe on BLACK chip mobos like Aorus 5 or ASRock Extreme 4 , with overclocking it to 4.8ghz , Cashe speed could be increased .

Thanks orbital.

If you had a preference, which would you opt for. AMD or Intel build?

Would go for Ryzen , Intel 8400 just beats it but pricing is insane . Also can slam in Zen2 in 3/4 years time in there for an upgrade .

As Plex mentioned, push 16GB even if you have to forgo something for a month !

And torn between gtx 1070 and 1080p 180hz though card wouldn't reach that speed in most AAA titles games or Vega 56 and 1440p 75hz VA screen....

Tamz build above is pretty much solid. Went for the MAX drive due to 25GB extra which windows OS takes up or more .
Also, P300... Buy 2x 140mm fans for the front. I forgot... Even if it's £4 budget fans !!

Yeah, I know - I was gently nudging orbital to get 16gb into the gaming build (where was the 1080 and the M2 drive orbital? :D). I'm on my phone so couldn't spec.

Can't list £520 11gbps gtx 1080s on here haha. And the way pricing is going now, unless NVMe is on a damn good deal, seems budget SSD with storage will be key ;(

Damn G-sync monitor costs !!!!!!

i did it for you :p got 16gb ram, but compromised on the monitor lol

I didn't even think of non G-sync Ti should drive that nicely without massive frame rate drops, bit of frame limiting and should be sweet .
Wasn't to keen on listing that Asus Dual card, hate it, didn't help I had arguement with Asus rep about it telling me there was a heatsink on ram chips when I had sent pictures of it clearly stating otherwise haha

g-sync is only good for midrange cards imo
but if one is getting a midrange card with an expensive monitor, why not get a top end gpu that can drive any monitor without g-sync?
g-sync entry price is too steep for me to stomach lol

The monitor is fine for a TN panel - and the Ti will keep the 144Hz honest - solid choice.

The foundation of your build coupled with 16gb and spangly Ti/144Hz - has got him a solid, bang for buck spec for his £1400.

Would be interested reading your findings - especially as house renovations have nearly finished. Builders should all be gone by the end of January (that or i'm adding their corpses to the skip)

And then i'll be speccing 2 maybe 3 builds for myself. I may wait for Zen+, as i've already had to delay my build by 3 months and i've waited years to do an AMD build...

A completely new tower build for myself (still interested in your case as a choice). A mini itx build for my daughter (her first computer) and perhaps an HTPC for the lounge - undecided.

Oh really? Didn't realise stock coolers were so good now.

I've been out of the PC building game for 6+ years, back then you pretty much always needed to buy an aftermarket cooler ;-)
