Is it possible to run a VPN 24x7 although ensuring somehow that gaming traffic goes through ISP and not the VPN tunnel to ensure gaming ping is not affected?

Am running a PfSense appliance.

Not wanting to know how to do it, just if it is possible.

If not possible, anyone have experience gaming through a VPN, does it affect gaming to a great degree?

Not "pro" so a few /ms here or there is not a problem.

Thanks.

Yes you can if you’re running pfSense. Use a firewall rule to change the gateway used by different devices/traffic/destination.

So for example default rule for everything via the VPN gateway then give your PS4 for example a static reservation and a firewall rule to send traffic from that IP out via the standard ISP gateway.

Or if you’re using your PC for gaming and also things you want to be behind a VPN then set a rule for that IP to be via standard ISP gateway but newsgroup, torrent or browsing traffic from the same IP via VPN (perhaps based on ports they use)

Or some other combination that suits your circumstances. All very possible.

I have multiple PC's in the house which are used for gaming.

Not sure how one can split website/gaming traffic as port redirecting would be problematic with multiple PC's wouldn't it?

Not really. Reserve an IP for each, create an alias that includes all the IPs and make the firewall rules for the alias like you would for a single IP.

I found with a particular game I played recently that some how I managed to get a better ping going through a VPN!
My ISP must have had some weird routing to the server based in Frankfurt and my VPN got me there with a good few ms less.

I am with Virgin Media with a rough 375Mbps download.

I am OK sacrificing some speed for security but am I unlikely to get anywhere near that with a VPN?

Depends on what spec your pfSense appliance is and which VPN provider you’re using.

Your CPU supports AES-NI so with a decent provider I reckon you’ll get over 100Mbps with an OpenVPN connection, but how much more I wouldn’t like to say. Reading around suggests other CPUs with the same single thread CPU mark can get about 300Mbps.
