Looking for a new keyboard to replace my 8 year old G15. I do quite a bit of office work as well as gaming on it. Dont really have more than 100 quid to shell out on it which is a shame as I like the look of the new RBG's.

Thanks

Richard

I have the Corsair K70 Gunmetal Cherry MX Brown Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (CH-9000059-UK) it has red led's and the sails logo.

Worth noting that browns will annoy the person your sitting next to at work ... Unless your in an office on your own (or home office) I'd go for reds!.

A total +1 for the Corsiar K70 however, brilliant keyboard.

Its a home office, will they annoy me? How loud are they and I found typing on reds quite slow is that something that you get get used to?

Have to say I am finding it hard to choose between Red and Brown and each day I feel differant. Never used a brown any unlikely to get to.

cheers

Just got the on-offer K70 (Thanks again OcUK!), primarily for the backlighting. Immediate experience is it is much louder than my out-going Microsoft digital media membrane keyboard. Perhaps over time I'll learn to only press as far as is needed to activate. If not I could always buy some O-rings to quieten the bottoming out.

Hope this will help with your switch decision.

Thank you that video does help. did you get the brown or the red? Also do o rings change how the keys work for gaming or do they just reduce sound?

Thanks again

I'm after a similar thing. I've never bought a keyboard for more than £15 before but I'm intrigued by mechanical keyboards since I'm a fast typer, plus I have a really nice gaming mouse already so might as well get a nice keyboard to go with it. Out of the Cherry switch types, I think brown would be best. Based on that YouTube video it doesn't seem any louder than my existing dome switch keyboard, plus it's supposedly good for mechanical "beginners".

It'd be used mainly for gaming (FPS mostly). Secondary usage would be coding/general document typing. It'd need to have media keys and ideally a calculator key (failing that, programmable macro keys so I can emulate it).

Based on these criteria and reading lots of reviews, it seems the Corsair K70, Corsair K70 RGB, and Logitech G710+ are the top contenders. The K70 is the cheapest right now but has no macro keys as far as I can tell, which is a deal breaker really (not being able to open calculator and immediately start doing sums with the numpad is crap; my el-cheapo keyboards and even laptop keyboard have this function). The G710+ looks pretty good, although the build quality doesn't look great, and the lack of a good palm rest is annoying. That leaves the K70 RGB, which is much more expensive than the other two and you can only create a macro key by sacrificing one of the standard once. :/

Of course there's also the K95, which is actually cheaper than the K70 RGB and looks fantastic on paper, except for the fact that the backlight LEDs fail constantly (based on reviews I've seen) and RMAing to the Netherlands is expensive.

Any thoughts?

I've only had mine for a few hours, but I'm in keyboard love!

The noise has come down a lot since I stopped smashing the keys in the same way I did with my membrane board so I won't be bothering with O-rings. The backlighting is excellent, with the 1st brightness more than sufficient for a darkened room. The gaming mode is easy to enable and programme and works entirely from the board, so no additional software. This could be a benefit or hindrance depending if you want multiple setups, or less bloat-ware installed. Volume roller works nicely. I understand the desire to have macro buttons, but for something like calculator it's just WinKey, c, a, l, c, Enter and that takes all of about one second to type! YMMV of course.

I know what you mean but it's just much more intuitive to be able to just use your right hand to do sums. Press the calculator key then bash away, rather than using the mouse or typing. I suppose if I was able to remap something useless like Scroll Lock to launch Calculator using third-party software that'd be OK but I bet I'd still regret not having macro keys down the line.

It's just a shame the K95 has the LED issues because otherwise it looks perfect.

If the K70 had even 3 or 4 buttons along the top that could be mapped it would be the perfect keyboard for my use. I love that it's very compact at the sides especially since I'm a bit tight for space on my desk between my mouse pad and DBA - designated beer area. I've heard that Corsair has an awful RMA service as delivery is excempt, and the replacement reconditioned unit has only 2 months warranty - even if your own board has longer. Perhaps OcUK can advise if there is a better way to ensure you don't get screwed over if you head down the K95 avenue.
