Hello

I currently have an i5-7600k on a z270 motherboard. I have the chance from work to get a xeon e5-1680v4 with 64GB RAM. I would pair this with the Asus ROG x99 motherboard. I already have an RTX 2080ti

I am wondering if I should do this or would I be better sticking with my i5. I have heard some people do have a xeon as their gaming/daily driver machine but I wouldn't want to do it if it was going to throttle my GPU due to the lower core clocks (3.4Ghz and boost to 4.0). The fact it is 8 core is very interesting for my photo and video editing but I game more than I edit.

Any advice would be appreciated. I do not have the space to run two rigs so it would be one or the other.

Thanks in advance
Gareth

For gaming I think the i5 is better, it has better performance per core and you can overclock for even faster clock speeds. The Xeon could be useful for photo/video editing.

What res do you game at? 1080p is more cpu bound, 1440p and 4k more gpu bound. If you're at a higher res and I expect you are with a 2080ti I don't think the Xeon will hurt you at all.

If there is any bottle necking, and I doubt there will be, it will be negligible. I'd personally go for it, if you do notice any performance decline, just revert to the i5 and flip the xeon.
