my crt has had its day!!!!!!

Im spending 250/300 on a brand spanking new tft which will be used for ammense gaming and movie watching. I will have it placed directly in front of me, so large viewing angles isnt a need.

iv read up on the different type of panels from the badass thread (thanx) but like most of us dumb newbies it doesnt register and im not fully understanding it all.

im worried of spending £232 on the Viewsonic VP920 and finding out the picture quality is panse. black will be grey and the overall colour wont be as vibrant

It might be worth having a read of this comparison which compares some of the best gaming TFT's in the market (in the 19" market that is). It also has a look at other panel technologies there with thye Samsung 970P and Viewsonic VP930 being covered. Hopefully it might help explain the differences there. I think given the budget you're going to be limited to 19" models, and the Viewsonic VX922 is arguably the best gaming TFT out there at the moment. It is a TN Film panel so you'll need to understand that it won't offer the all round performance that a couple of models (those mentioned above just now) will offer. TN Film is a good gaming technology and offers very good responsiveness. However, viewing angles are restrictive and movie playback is a little noisy. Since colour depth is limited as well, it's not as good for photo workers, but dont let this bother you, it still offers very good vibrant and accurate colours and is perfectly fine for your needs.

The other panel technologies in the Viewsonic VP930 (P-MVA) and in the Samsung 970P (PVA) are more rounded, not suffering so much in the areas that TN Film can suffer. However they come at more of a cost and aren;t as responsive either. I think the main problem with TN models is the viewing angle really, and for your needs, models like the Viewsonic VX922 would be a good bet
