After years of putting off upgrading my piece of rubbish pc, my hand has finally been forced when it suddenly died on me today. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the following spec, since I'm getting CoD withdrawal symptoms and need to order a new pc soon.

Processor: Intel Core i7 950
GPU: Point of View GTX 470 Graphics Card
Mobo: Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 1366 Motherboard
RAM: Corsair Memory Dominator GT 4GB DDR3 2000 Mhz CAS 8 XMP DHX Fan Dual Channel Desktop
HDD1: Fujitsu 300GB MBA3 RC SAS Hard Drive
HDD2: Hitachi Deskstar 1TB 7K2000 Hard Drive
Case: Antec Sonata Elite Black Mid Tower Computer Case

Should come to around £950 (I could reduce this by around 150 if I got rid of HDD1, but I wanted a quick HD for programs and a larger slower one for files)

Does anyone know if I'll need to buy a new version of windows 7 or whether its possible to use my previous copy?

You're help's really appreciated!

Amy :D

if your copy of windows 7 is the oem version then its technically 'tied' to the motherboard it was originally installed on. tho i've read on here that ringing MS and telling them a sob story about your motherboard dying and having to be replaced may result in them issuing a new license key.

your HDD2 i'd switch to this Sammy F3 1TB

also have you had a look at the new range of intel processors, sandybridge, yet? or have you a specific reason for wanting the i7 950?

If your copy is a retail version, then yes you can reuse it. If it's an OEM copy, then no, unfortunately you will need a new copy.
How about going for Sandybridge? They perform better in gaming.

For motherboard, this is a nice one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-312-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1906

HDD1: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-130-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=768
HDD2: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-104-SA&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

You haven't stated PSU, so this one is good if you don't plan to SLi in future: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-117-AN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

Just buy this lot.

very nice stulid, have tempted to sell up and buy something similar myself! tho minus the case, i love my CM advanced too much, tho dunno why

at the OP, yup get stulids build and your 150 notes better off....sorted

Thanks for the feedback guys, I had completely overlooked the sandybridge processors. I've tweaked my build as a result, changed mobo etc and taken into account your suggestions. In particular I've put in a smaller SSD to replace the two HDDs that I had before since they seem to be so much faster, and I don't have a massive amount of data besides games.

I now have:

Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 470 Superclocked NVIDIA Graphics Card
Mobo: Asus P8P67 LE Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge)
RAM: G.Skill RipJawX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
HDD1: 128GB SSD Crucial RealSSD Solid State Drive
Case: Antec 100 One Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case

Should come to about £865

Any comments you have are welcome. I THINK it all works together.

Thanks guys. ;)

Go with the 2500K. Hyper-threading is useless in gaming. If you overclock the 2500K to 4.2ghz+ then it will last you for a long time. Use the money saved for a storage drive too perhaps.

Thanks for all the replies on this, it's been really helpful. I'll be ordering my parts in the next few days, influenced in no small part by what's been suggested. Once again I'm indebted to you all. Many thanks!
