Ayia Napa: Twelve teenagers in court after 'British woman raped'

Twelve Israeli teenagers have appeared in court in Cyprus over the alleged rape of a 19-year-old British woman.

The alleged attack was said to have taken place in a hotel in the popular holiday resort of Ayia Napa.

The boys - most of whom are aged between 16 and 18 except one, who is 15 - have not yet entered any pleas.

They have been remanded in custody and police have been given a further eight days to investigate.

The British woman contacted police in the early hours of Wednesday morning saying she had been raped in a hotel in Ayia Napa. Later that day police arrested the 12 teenagers.

Hopefully the girl is alright.

Yikes,

Well this post has aged well.

Considering how viciously some people attacked you for that opinion it seems you were right....I only called you out for saying we can't go the other way too far and just not believe anyone.

But a part of me also secretly had my doubts......well there we are.

NOW THERE LIES THE BIGGEST PROBLEM. Women can and do lie. It happens and frankly its repulsive because it puts legitimate victims of rape under unnecessary scrutiny/ruins the lives of innocent men..... She needs to face prison tbh.

So we shouldn't trust someone when they say they've been raped then?

Forgot about this thread but was then reminded of it when I saw the story on an seemingly dubious website @Diddums (quite deliberately) used as a source in another thread...

Just one thing:

"The group, aged from 15 to 20, denied the claim."

"aged from 15 to 20"

"aged from 15"

Surely she's now the rapist?

No? Women cant rape.

I suppose that depends on the Cypriot definition of rape, which may/may not be similar to most "Western" rape laws which say "rape" can only be "male on female" using specific "penis in orifice" language. I wonder if, with transfolk becoming more common and blurring the line between "male on female", there will be a change to the law surrounding what can be classed as rape in the UK as I think it could do with a total overhaul.

Well apparently Cyprus is known for poor conviction rates, they dont seem to have an official sexual assault definition, rape is defined as per. Don't believe they have a equitable version at all it would appear, not sure what the inverse would taken as, probably harassment.

But statutory rape is based on age, not the sexual act, surely. So gender definitions aren't relevant.

It is relevant when you consider her claim and their claims, there is no information on who she had interactions with realistically, all we know is that she was with a few of them, she claimed they had video'd her/helped keep her immobile. Which would imply they the youngest person being underage an irrelevancy.

This is just a pointless side issue honestly, we dont even know if the underage person provided her with that information before she reported it, it's not worth discussing the merits with this case unless they charge her with it.

How could a man do the same? Wasn't the point of that case that she pretended to be a man. She didn't swap places with anyone etc.. pretend to be someone else, she was the person they consented to sleep with albeit she lied about something rather more fundamental than pretending to be a rock star etc...

LOL if telling porkies on a night out becomes rape then I'm in a lot of trouble, used to make up all sorts of BS when chatting to girls in bars etc... especially on holiday. Most found it humorous especially when it was deliberate and rather obvious lies, though one particularly stunning girl believed an outrageous lie and was seriously ****ed off when I messaged her after meeting on holiday and told her it wasn't true.. threatened to post about it on Instagram to all her followers (she was some wannabe influencer type albeit only a few thousand followers so not really working out!).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_by_deception

Israel had a case where someone lied about working for the state and implying the victim would get benefits. The UK does the dark room deception/lying about gender/condom broken definition, but could probably be expanded given enough cases.

Some of these posts are mighty crass and not very patriotic (where's all that Britishness after Brexit gone?) either.

Oh it's a total mess, and it doesn't help that the anti-semites have come out of the woodwork to do some mental gymnastics and blame Israeli. To me the whole thing is more about how badly the Cypriot police/courts handled this when it could have been far simpler.

How the **** is that anti-Semitic? Why wouldn't Israel pressure the visibly corrupt Cypriot government/police to help a group of their citizens escape prejudice? Seems intelligent to me, and it's not like it's unusual for Israel to lobby other countries for things it wants, nor dabble in corruption of their own if the charges against Netanyahu (you know... their PM) are legitimate.

It is not racist to speculate that a government helps it's citizens. Just feels like the term is losing all worth by being thrown around to end discussions, which is something i would have thought a right-wing person would abhor.

Being non-consensually filmed even if the act itself was consensual would still be voyeurism, but even so the video(s?) in question might not have captured a non-consensual rape that wasn't filmed.
