Gangster films please

Do you think if Martin Scorsese directed them in his style, they would have been better?

Better than casino and goodfellas, or better than it was? Assuming you meant the former, then no, since casino and goodfellas had incredible characterisation and acting, notably Joe Pesci. I don't think Scorcese could have improved the story and script of history sufficiently.

Though Goodfellas is probably my favourite film full stop, so I'm not entirely neutral in that regard.

A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises would have been better with Martin Scorsese directing, there hasn't been a film that hes done that I haven't liked.

I really enjoyed that, and whilst we're on Viggo, Eastern Promises is worth a punt also.

Never watched it but I'll try to keep an eye out for it. On the Viggo Mortensen theme American Yakuza is about gangsters but I'd probably not recommend going out your way to watch it, the film's decent but nothing special.

However it has just reminded me of Infernal Affairs, definitely worth seeking out.

If it's not yet been mentioned then Gangster No 1 is my favourite British gangster film.

It's amazing how different peoples tastes can be, I really didn't like it and despite owning it have never felt the need to rewatch it. In fact I'd probably prefer to watch Revolver rather than it which is saying something.

One that I don't see mentioned here but is pretty good is True Romance. Sexy Beast is another gangster film that you could watch, if you've never seen it you'll be impressed how vitriolic Ben Kingsley can be.

only one that hasn't been mentioned which i thought was a brilliant movie is london to brighton didnt make it to the big screen but very well written and acted and very gritty

Different stroke for different folks. I've never enjoyed any of the likes of Casino,Godfather, etc but know plenty who rave about them.

Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai. Stars Forest Whitaker. Quite an old film now probably made mid 90s but one of my faves.

As much as I dislike Hollywood glitz The Departed is a modern classic.

There have been some excellent Japanese gangster movies in the last two decades. Google anything starring the actor/director Takeshi Kitano. As long as you can deal with subtitles or understand Japanese your laughing.

Go to Japanese filmmaker Takashi Kitano for some great gangster films; brother is his most accessible being mostly English; sonatine offers a fresh perspective on the genre

Suprised no one has mentioned Gomorrah... I'll be honest, i haven't got round to watching it yet as it is still lingering on my rental list. I remeber it getting good reviews, anyone recommed it?

Its a bit all over the place, the storylines are all woven together. Personally I preferred the book.

Sonatine is a decent film. Off-topic i know, but if you want something a little different from him watch dolls. If you havent already :P

Whilst it goes without saying that Scorsese is an excellent director. It does a massive disservice to Cronenberg suggesting that the story would've been any better executed.

History of violence for me was an average comic turned into an average film. Eastern promises is nothing short of excellent and very far removed from the scorsese style of gangster film. Celebrate the differences! :D
