So I've managed to get a garage a mile from my house for my car and car related gubbins (#SWAG).

The existing lock is as you'd expect from an up and over door, crap. Adding extra security would give me some peace of mind for long dark nights ahead. Something along the lines of this, really beefy bolt lock or a hasp & staple

There's already 3 garages there out of 20~ with some bolt locks on the front, which if you're criminally inclined would lead you down a path of 'What's so special in there?'. Well I do have something special in mine, along with some quite expensive tools I'd like to keep.

If you were in my shoes what would you do? Secure it properly or leave it be?

I was once sent off to fetch a Jaguar off a lorry site and we found the Jag in a old locked barn.

When we got in we found one of these chained to the back alloy:

Very good deterrent.

I used to have a garage in a block of 20 or so, of which one would be broken into every month or so (they were back from the main road and unlit). My garage wasn't broken in to again after fitting some of those internal bolts, however you'll need a pretty beefy battery-powered drill to mount them away from a source of power.

I'd have put my money on the Jag! Powerful cats those

yeah this is a similar scenario, it's a dead end and used by about 40 houses to park at the back of their houses, but it's unlit.

HSS hire for the drill I'd guess!

How do they attach and secure? I have a Bosch battery SDS drill you are welcome to borrow. Depends on hole size and depth if it'll be man enough.

You could mount a second more secure door inside the outer door - leaving a look of "nothing worth stealing in here" on the outside, while having a fort-knox esque security system behind it?

Whatever you put there is a deterrent.

Anything you can do to make the break in take time, effort, and make noise, will put them off.

I'd suggest putting the best security on you can afford, with regards to decent bolts, locks, fitting it properly, etc and that gives you the best chance.

Not that it will help you if you are a mile away, consider an alarm too. Something that is so loud or high pitched they can't stand to be inside when it goes off, and it results in the police being called due to the noise nuisance. Just make sure its reliable and doesn't go off all the time without cause though !

Is your house close enough to get an alarm that notifys your keyfob ? If so I'd get one. If that's no good I'd get an alarm then I'd get to know whoever lives closest to the garage & give him my mobile number in case the alarm goes off. After I had done all that I'd nail it down with some chunky locks.
As a previous entertainer of the dark side I'd say out of the 20 garages on offer the 17 unlocked ones would be hit first & the chunky noisy to open ones would be left.
The locks are not all about locking, make them noisy & awkward to open & the same with the garage door. Noise goes a long way during the night & scares the **** out of those creeping for a living.
