Garageband Free?

Afternoon everyone.

This has me totally confused, I have 6 or so iMACs in a school classroom that require Garageband. Now I was under the impression Garageband was free but you can pay for extra effects/instruments or whatever?

Every time I go to the app store I don't see any free option at all.

Its should have download it as soon as the Imac was set up. How old is the Mac?

What OS did the iMacs come with?

I am guessing it either Mavericks or Yosemite.
