Garages. Stupidest idea ever.

It just occurred to me that I don't know a single person who uses their garage for their car. Everyone just uses them as extra storage space. So with this in mind, they should be built for this purpose.

Tons of houses have them and nobody uses them for the purpose they were designed for. How utterly retarded.

No the thread doesn't have much of a point. Just a random observation I thought I'd share.

This is where you all claim to keep your car in your garage.

Our house has a garage, and it is indeed full of junk. That's going to change soon though as we want to get rid of junk and we want to keep the car safe, this area is not what it used to be. :(

We use it for storage, but we often back cars up to it for a service, etc.

Surely it's better just to build them so they can fit a car, just in case the homeowner does actually want to put a car in it! :p

But if 99% of people use them for storing their random junk then would it make sense to design them for that purpose?

But what if they want to put their car in it? :p

Leave them as they are now and they can be used for storing and putting your car in, no need to re-design :)

As an Australian, I sympathise with your post. Back home, a garage is used for its proper purpose. Over here, garages seem to be used for anything and everything except keeping a car in. I have yet to learn why.

One thing I have noticed is that British garages are absolutely tiny. They're stupidly narrow, and only just long enough to accommodate a medium sized car. This may help to explain why people don't put their cars in them - because they simply won't fit. Which of course, defeats the purpose of having a garage in the first place.

Why is it that so many things in this country are unfit for purpose?

we use our garage for our pool table and it also has random junk in there. too hard to get a car in there anyway as its near the main road so would be annoying other drivers getting out opening it etc.

Garages are crap but a double garage is just right for driving a car in and unloading without any hassle.

How many people have a double garage though, automatic door and internal entrance to the main house is also good. Not many people have a house that big that I know of though

Here you go, beautifull house for about 60,000 complete with double garage. The americans know how to do it properly :)

If my garage were bigger and I could get my car in without whacking the door on the wall then I would store it in there. At the minute it is indeed used for junk storage.

In towns people don't seem to use them all that much, but out in the middle of nowhere we use our 4 door garage for cars, as well as our two car (single door) garage for cars. Most of the time the cars are being worked on. :)

its very rare to have a house with enough storage space so having a garage is like a godsend.

mine is full of junk, i really need to give bulky rubbish a call, ive got 5 TV's , 2 fridge-freezers , 2 armchairs and a sofa, an old bed , an old kitchen table + benchs and all sorts of crap just rammed in there aswell as loads of cardboard boxs full of stuff from clothes to pc parts.

my wife is a right hoarder aswell theres loads of kids toys in thier that will never be used again but she wont just throw them out
