Garmin GPS advice?

So my cousin has a Garmin Colorado 300 GPS for his hiking and off road biking he does but can't seem to get it to sync up with memory-maps the software he was recommended to use. I can't make heads nor tails of this memory-maps. I'm wondering what else you guys would recommend.

He wants to be able to plot custom routes and I don't know what to do as I've used a Garmin before.
 
What phone does he have?

There are quite a few apps where you can plot routes online, save as GPX files and then follow then on his phone.

Viewranger is decent, Strava *might* allow it but i'm not 100%

Garmin is generally the best option though, and that product gets good reviews. Where did he get it from? Could maybe head to a store and pick up a newer model and ask their help setting it up?
 
Bought from a friend apparently, no chance of him simply upgrading etc as he's a full blown conservationist and is as Captain Planet as they come... He'll keep hold of this one way or another until it dies.

It needs to be something that will sync with his Garmin GPS
