Hey Peeps, its summer! the time of year a man's thoughts turn to burning things outside, and drinking beer :)

Now i'm thinking its time to move on from the slow and charring experiance of BBQing on coal and get a nice Gas BBQ.

Does anyone have any recommendations? not looking to spend too much, but equally don't want anything thats going to fall apart/blow up in a fireball of pain after two uses....

cheers
Sam

Hank Hill would recommend Propane. I have a Butane based one.

Webers are pretty good.

So are Outbacks.

They both cost a bit though, but they pay for themselfs after a few years when they dont break like cheaper BBQs so you wont have to buy a replacement.

I got a big outback jobbie which is in it's 3rd year of use. Took me a few hours to clean it out last week but it's still in great shape. Was £300 but worth every penny IMO. Get one with a hood, lava rocks are important too. flat griddle is great for steaks and cheese and stuff

Outback, Weber etc. anything Aussie TBH, they know their bbqs

A proper BBQ uses charcoal. Anything else is just cooking outside.

Enjoy your unevenly cooked meat that tastes of burnt!

Joking aside i just prefer gas because its quicker, easier and less messy. And yes it is just cooking outside, but if youve got people round and they are sitting int he garden you dont want to be cooking in the kitchen do you.

don't get me wrong, coal bbq are totally better for taste and real manly cooking... but for ease of use, lack of food poisoning and higher drinking & eating : cooking ratio gas wins it for me :)

Will be having a look out for a decent outback in the local area :)

This argument gets done every year :D

A guy on TV last week who was the BBQ world champion 2 years running so knows considerably more than anyone here went for gas. I understand the man/fire argument but the taste is no different if you know what your doing.

Oh and make sure it's propane its much hotter and can then be used in the winter too. I use mine all the time for meat in the winter instead of using my oven :)

We got a nice Beefeater one a couple of years ago ( http://www.gardensite.co.uk/Beefeater_Gas_Barbecues/ ) and it's very well made. Not cheap, but it will last for many years (the roasting hood and chassis have a 25 year guarantee)

Ignore the charcoal fascists - nice evenly cooked food from a gas BBQ tastes just as good (if not better) than you get from a 'proper' charcoal BBQ, and it's much less hassle.

Wouldn't really feel like a proper barbecue to me if there wasn't any charcoal.

Our super expensive jobbie, think it was £15 or something from Tesco :p

This weekend it did trout:

Gas? Pah!

I used to be against gas for bbq but after seeing and using the gas one my father in law bought I was converted. The food comes out much nicer although you need to add extra bits to get the smoked food taste if you like that. Its much easier to set and you can control the heat really easily. I personally would go back to charcoal its far to messy and the results arent any better. That said I think you need to spend a fair bit to get a decent one for best results. You still get the flame grilled taste as the fat burns on the lava rocks.
