Gas storage tank things

Guys,

At the side of motorways in citys there is quiet often large storage tanks (usually blue) at the side of the road. They seem to be at different levels everytime i drive past them. What i would like to know is what they are called, and is there any online information on how they work?

Strange but im curious.

Apparently you can tell what energy supply companies expect to happen to the price of gas by the level the tank is at.
If they expect the price to go up they buy and store lots, and the tanks are high...and vice-versa.

I live about 3 minutes from one on the Forth.

There used to be another two but they got demolished for housing.

They are that, gas tanks. A couple in Glasgow too.
