I have been given the task of setting up a firewall/gateway box for small business, and I was wondering if this setup sounds like the best topology.
For being on a budget I am either going to use smoothwall or OpenBSD as the firewall/gateway box.

Should look something like this,

Internet > ADSL router > Firewall box > Switch > Internal Network.

I need to setup VPN access so that the employees can work from home (I.e so they can use remote desktop). Is this pretty simple to setup port forwarding with smoothwall or should I go about this another way?

Thanks.

assuming you don't just go and buy a router that includes a firewall and VPN endpoint....

corporate smoothwall has an add-on for VPN,
that would seem the easiest option

and maybe getting a BeWAN ADSL card would allow you to dispense with the ADSL router

the site docs are pretty good, and they do a 1 day training course on FW/VPN

(ah, just re-read post, you are on a budget....ignore)

in which case this may be relevant

Looks fine from where i'm sitting, I've done a similar thing with a Fedora box in my house.

Are the clients going to be windows or linux based? 'Remote Desktop' being of MSWare origin isnt compatible with linux but it is possible to set up folders for each user so they can access their files in the office and remotely.

HTH

Yeah they will be windows only, so thats not a problem. I know a integrated firewall/adsl router would be the best solution straight to the switch. However I have a 1U rackmounted server I want rid of that will be ideal for the a firewall box hehe. Thanks for the input guys.
