I'm new to playing it online and I don't think I ever will. I keep being matched up with players with level 40 experience and when I get promoted to the lowely level 2, I get my butt kicked and get DEMOTED back to level 1, I mean, whats the point?

Am I just crying about nothing or do a lot of people have issue with this? How on earth do you get higher when even if you have a good game, you loose and get demoted still?

Gears online is a joke. The ranking system and the matchmaking is ridiculous. Furthermore you get matched with Americans with pings so high the integer is into powers.

Gears 2 is punishingly difficult online but that's why many like it...

Agreed. However, unlike most fps/action games, this one doesn't even allow you to put one foot infront of the other without being slaughtered by some level 40 odd person.

Its not specifically gears 1/2, its all xbox live games. the devs can only do so much with the netcode, yes they could region match better and maybe improve match making but at the end of the day the fault is with peoples connections and the differences in them.

This brings in the argument that there should be dedicted servers for the most popular games. Shouldnt cost that much considering 10m people pay ~£40 a year for live.

Or do like pc games do and choose the game with the best ping from a list instead of that being chosen for you.

Ok well to set the record straight - you DONT loose XP for loosing matches, so you've been quitting them which DOES make you loose XP

And secondly Ive been playing gears 2 online for a good month solidly everyday now and I can safely say people saying that its crap are just crap at the game themselves and are whining about getting their bum handed to them.

There's nothing wrong with the netcode, all games get lag and latency. I get around one laggy game in every 20 I play.

Just stick with it instead of complaining about how crap you are. The experience system isn't based on wins and losses simply on how much you play the game...

Oh and I'm one of those "pro" level 40's and I only started playing again 3 weeks ago.

Gears 2 with 5-9 mates in a private match is fine, guns do what they are supposed to do etc. As soon as you get out into the 'world' against someone from the US, it's disgusting. You can shotgun someone at point blank range & they don't die but then turn round & blow you to pieces. The lag & host advantage is appalling, much worse than gears 1.

OP - try & play in the Annex/KOTH matches, they are a bit more forgiving than execution as you respawn.

I must agree with Roachy the lag does seem to have gotten better in public matches. I do though tend to play it during the daytime and it still takes a while to matchmake.

When it's bad though it's a shocking with lag as I've ever seen a game. :(

Pretty much this for me, only way I can get a kill in a public match is to run around with the chainsaw, throw grenades everywhere or plant them on walls. Even with the chainsaw it is still hit and miss since the chainsaw duel is already over by the time it starts on my screen which means I lose every single time.

It's a fun game in horde or private games, but in matchmaking its just unplayable. It was the same in Gears 1 just not as bad.

I played loads over the double experience weekend with my bro using 2 xboxes on the same net conection on public servers and we hardly had any laggy games at all so I think its a case of trying it yourself before believing all the doom and gloomers.

If youre losing experience youre either quittin early as has already been said or your net conection is laggy which can also negate your experience. With practice you'l climb up the ranks - it shouldnt be that hard to rank up in the first few hours. At worst you can smoke grenade someone, to knock them down and chain saw them or shot gun them. It takes time to get better and learn which weapons are best for which situations, the map layouts etc.

Match maing isnt very good for finding similar level players, it takes an age to find any sort of match but that rank doesnt indicate skill, anyone can grind up to higher levels if they finish matches to gain the exp theyve earned..

The lag in public matches is a joke.It pretty much detemines who's gonna win or lose a match.
The smokes in it were annoying as hell but no they've made it so you cringe instead of getting knocked over it's not too bad.
I agree that servers should have been in place for this as gears of war games are pretty much the flagship games for the 360.

I play this on average 2-3 hours a night atm and I love it, I just turned level 39 and feel fairly skilled at the game, however I will agree that it has a very steep online learning curve and takes a lot of practice to become good.

An aspect I really like about the game is the tactical underpinning, of course you need to be a good shot but if you have a good team that knows the maps, the weapons and their spawns your already over half way there, I mainly play a support role for the teams I am in, suppressing with the hammerburst at range and tagging enemies with the sniper rifle so my teammates can mop them up easier on the ground, this doesnt give me the most kills but I find my downs mostley outweighs my kills.

I think if you stick at it you will soon learn through error to way to play and after you achieve some wins you will really start the like the game.

I gave up playing this because of the stupid lag, you were basically forced to sit through completely unplayable matches because if you quit you'd lose XP!

I'm not quitting games!!! I'll always play to the end, so what else could explain my demoting? I've played over 100 rounds online but still at level 1.

I really like it, it can be laggy as hell, but for the times when you get a good game its worth it to me. Its probably the only fps I play anymore. It does take a while to get good at though, it works very different to every other fps out there.

It's not an FPS.

You're either really, really crap or you're not playing public matches. Are you playing private matches with your mates or something?

I'm not great, but I wouldn't say I was crap. I mostly have a positive Kill/Death spread with a decent amount of points, rarely finish bottom. Also, yes, these are public games.
