Simply, a car with 6 forward gears in addition to reverse - Would you define this as 6 Speed or 7 speed gearbox?

I was always under the impression that reverse counted as a "speed" when defining your gearbox, but now I am not so sure after looking at adverts for people selling the same car I have. Want to make sure my advert for selling mine is correct!

I wouldn't count reverse as a speed.

IRC reverse is just first gear with a crawler gear put inbetween it and the final drive so I suppose technically it's not a seperate gear anyway.

You don't count reverse. I don't think any manufacture has ever done that..

ZF 5 speed. 5 forward gears. 5hp19
ZF 6 speed. 6 forward gears 6hp
GM 5 speed. 5 forward gears etc etc
