Gearbox / Linkage failure?

Afternoon all,

My car (2004/54 Boxster 987S) has decided to celebrate the Christmas period by dying... :(

The gearstick has gone floppy and I can't change gear. I thought it was stuck in third as when I attempted to pull away it would stall unless I slipped the clutch, but I've just been out to try it again and it will now pull away without using the throttle.

In the absence of a mechanic being open on a Sunday afternoon, can anyone shed any light on what the problem may or may not be?

Merry Christmas!

Hi Kingy I'm no mechanic but I'd suggest a view from the under side may help. Maybe some linkage has come adrift. I had a similar many years a go. I got under side and found a retaining spring clip had gone, thus allowing the linkage to the box drop off

It cost (me) next to nothing to sort it out however mine was a more common type of car than a Boxer

This is a relatively common problem on the Boxster, usually caused by the balljoint on the end of the selector cable popping apart. You should be able to see if the cables are attached at the gearbox end by looking under the back of the car with a torch on the right hand side of the gearbox.

I know there's a flat undertray under there so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to see even if I had the foggiest idea what I was looking at?

Any idea on how big a job this is likely to turn into?

Ie, is it something that the AA can fix, or am I likely to need to get it towed?

Cheers for your help... :)

If the cable isn't actually broken they should be able to push the balljoint back on, but if it's happened once it'll do it again. I suspect fitting new cables would be a pretty big job.

The AA guy has been and apparently the cable has broken, so it's being towed to the nearest OPC...

Boo & hiss! I've only had it back 2 days!
