Im not sure how many litres of gearbox oil I need to put in, I've put in 2 1/2 (thats what was in it) litres so far and drove for a bit and im not confident on it. The car is a toyota celica (1995). Anyone have any ideas?

On the car I have done, (Rover and Honda FWD boxes) you just fill until the oil flows out of the fill hole. I suggest you find the service manual for your car as I wouldnt like to guess :)

I'd check if it has a dipstick as some boxes certainly do, if not I would probably try to check with Toyota and if I got no joy then I'd fill it up until it came out. ;)

Click me..

Top Right hand column, move mouse pointer over 'How to'

Then move it over 'Repair/Maintain' on the new submenu.

Then Click 'Change gearbox oil'

A nice full guide there, might not apply to your gearbox though? Check the pictures on the guide to be semi-sure.

Got that site on my googling skills also, but thats for a GT4, which would include the transfer box etc. Thanks anyway.

I've not seen a manual box where the filler didn't act as the max level.

Fill it till it overflows, check it by poking your finger in the hole.

There's nothing to go wrong by overfilling a standard manual box, its not going to pick it up and burn it.

kinda a hijack but same subject so ill do it anyway.... how often should gearbox oil be changed? I'm not sure if its changed on the std service intervals? Car in sig.

on the older golfs it has to be filled to when it overflows from the fill hole and then another 250ml has to go in through the tower.

find out specifically for your gearbox tbh
