Got a problem with my focus it’s a 2003 1.6

It’s either Gearbox related or clutch related if the later it’s under warranty but I’m getting conflicting reports on which one it is.

With the car Idling and in neutral if you press the clutch pedal to the floor then release the pedal fairly quick the gearbox knocks and rattles loud enough to hear it inside the cabin.

If you do the same but release the pedal slowly there is no noise.

Occasional; there is the rattle knocking when at cold start, it’s like something is unsettling a bearing or something inside the gearbox or clutch.

Anybody know if this is clutch related or Gearbox related.

Thanks Dutch

Release bearing?

As in the clutch release bearing ?

It had a New Clutch & Slave cylinder and release bearing fitted 6 months ago by Ford.

Ford are saying any noise With the engine running and the transmission in neutral is gearbox related and not clutch and they think it might be the input shaft bearing.

But then they say the input shaft bearing usually makes a noise all the time when its shot which mine dont :(

Focus's are fitted with a concentric slave cylinder which is a release bearing and slave cylinder in one and its very unlikely for that to be the noise your describing.

If the knock is heavy then i would start with checking the gearbox mounting.

Definitely a knocking sound but fast - at a guess about 120 knocks a minute.

Gearbox mount has some oil contamination but could that cause something to knock from inside the gearbox?

Thanks for the replies Dutch

Almost forgot if you push down a little on the clutch pedal while it is knocking you can feel it through the pedal.

Could it be a warped flywheel or clutch dia plate or broken/loose rivets on the clutch plate ???

Which would most likely give clutch judder on take off...
