"After the recent fanboy grab for MGS4, it would seem that this is an equally valid argument at this stage in the generation. As many of us know, Sony Pictures is working in correlation with FoxHound Studios to bring the MGS movie out of the dark. This is considerable leverage for exclusivity rights that often gets overlooked in the ongoing debate regarding MGS4 and it's true home, the PS3.

On the flipside, it would seem that Developer/Publisher relations between Epic and Microsoft Game Studios is at an all time low and even spilling out into the public. In short, Epic has had to break every rule they've laid down for themselves and their reputation with the PC gaming community in the name of Microsoft profiteering... and they know it!

Cliff Bleszinski of Epic has even been quoted as threatening Microsoft to port over GeOW to the PS3 to try to leverage some developer rights over the content of the game and XBox Live, but they have already inked the contract and Microsoft is winning much to the chagrin of Epic. Is there a change in the tides over at Epic? Have they learned their lesson from doing business with the devil? Unreal Tournament games have always used OpenGL in correlation with DirectX in the PC sector. These guys were also one of the first to show off their game engine running on early PS3 devleopment hardware at E3 '05. It seems almost like a perfect match. "

The ball is definitely in Epic's court right now. They definitely have Microsoft by the sack on this one.

Seems like the publishers are striking back against the console manufactures, I thought Microsoft held the rights to Gears of war but i may be mistaken. Maybe it was just publisher rights so Epic could sell GeOW2 to another publisher, who knows but i doubt its true at all, just spin on whats been said (bit like the MGS rumors :D )

I too thought Microsoft owned the IP, they did finance a large part of the project I believe.

I'd guess it's more likely to see the sequels on other platforms rather than the original.

It's not called GeOW... 'tards.

MS were stupid with the way they dealt with epic, forcing paid content etc. I hope GoW goes multi platform and MS learn a lesson.

Is an interesting thought, especially if Epic want to release a Gears movie, as we all know what a shambles the Halo one turned into, or didn't turn into as the case is.
Think MS might be shooting themselves in the foot tbh, they seem to have really annoyed Epic, which will be noted around the industry. Epic may drag there feet and not quite try as hard with UT3 on the 360. Also they screwed over Red Octane too, maybe word will start to spread, i dunno. But on of the xbox's greatest features, really could be its biggest downfall.

It does get overlooked about the MGS movie (Josh holloway for snake, please!) but i still think MGS4 will go to the 360, but if it is before 2009, well i wouldn't imagine so.

I honestly would be surprised if MS didn't have gears pretty watertight, but as the OP says, it IP could be slightly different, if MS as only the publisher, do not own all the rights to Gears. Hmmmm

The Halo movie will happen. It only stalled because Peter Jackson wanted some unkown ad director to direct it, which caused the financial backers to pull out. There's no doubt it will still happen.

Eh?

I have low hopes for any video game movie. AThere hasn't ever been a decent one and neither MGS or GoW will change that, they may be popular but I bet they are crap.

Nope iirc the backers pulled out because MS wanted such a large budget (reportedly over 135 Million) and such a large cut of the takings they didn't see enough money in it for themselves so told MS to shove it.

I think MGS has good chance to be successful because it has a good story line. MGS game was successful because of its story and cinematic experience

I read the sources, one is a CVG article where they say nothing about this, the other is a user post on a forum which looks dedicated to Sony brand whores which refference the same CVG article which says nothing about this.

I call shenanigans! :D

This thread is a load of...

Microsoft even had the whole project underseen, remember the videos and the MS guy that had to ensure and report on Epics decisions, schedules and performance. Remember Bill Gates and Cliffy shaking hands, guys Epic was sub contracted simple as that and with regards royalities or profit sharing you lot can guess all you want. PS3 getting GOW what utter tripe, as if and why, yeah fall out with Ms to move over to a platform with 1/5th the installed userbase, wow thats a good business move even if they could do it.

Really some of you guys are nuts and need to get over you MS hatred or silly notions. As a further note even if Gears did appear on PS3 it wouldnt be as good as the PS3 hasnt the availability of the 512mb of video ram, something Mr Gates spoke of not so long ago as a reference in how X360 could maintain a level of visual quality over the PS3.

Be my guest to bet against GOW II appearin on Xbox 360.

I think its unlikely we will ever see the Gears IP coming to the PS3 - microsoft seem to have a iron grip on it, and fair enough to them, they forked out a shed load of cash themselves to aid in production.

But then i'm not bothered, gears was, once you get past the rather superb graphics, a pretty average FPS imo, it was short, the weapons didnt make me giggle like a school girl like i did when say, i fired the ripper in turok 2 for the first time, the mavity gun of halflife2 fame or even the BFG in doom, which for me is one of the most important things in a FPS.

It is no secret however that Epic are quite peeved with MS at present, whether that will win Sony any exclusives is difficult to say, the PS3s success won't truely be known until christmas as in thier infinate wisdom sony managed to miss last xmas in the majority of the world. However i will say Epic look like they no longer want any exclusive interactions with MS anymore due to recent publicised fiascos such as the map pack release, this means more quality multi-platform games, so for people like me that can only afford one console all the better.

MS did not sub contract epic to make gears, epic showed to them, MS agreed to finance the marketing budget in return for rights to the names gears of war 1 & 2 therefore dictating that if the new ip was successful the sequel in name would go to 360. If epic decided to produce a sequel with a different title that didn't read as gears of war 2 then it would be free to be multi format. But seriously this is all conjecture and won't happen, the biggest thing I take from this is ms seem to be rubbing devs and some 3rd party publishers up the wrong way witch isn't good for business. Seems that little headstart is going to their head, they feel its monoply time.

the 360 has total of 512mb of memory for the whole system not just for the GPU. It is shared

I said i didnt believe in the fact the gears may come to the PS3, but was more interested in that Epic are trying to twist Microsofts arm for more money etc by the sound of things. Just wonder how far Microsoft will go to make sure it never gets a PS3 release, not that the game interest me anyway. Like I said seems that game developers are covering the cost of games either by making them multi-platform or by asking for financial or other aid to keep games exclusive.

Yes the budget was a factor, but only because it was to be trusted to an unkown director, who would ever think a Halo movie wouldn't be hugely expensive?

I guess neither of us actually know for sure, but all the info I've heard on it points towards the unkown director being a large factor.

You would expect details like profit sharing to be sorted at the time of putting the money forward, seems pretty silly to pledge vast amounts of money without even negotiating what percentage of the returns they would take.

So do I, it would be nice to know the download numbers for the free content and the paid content and how the paid content effected numbers online.

True, but the PS3's RSX doesn't have the shader horsepower of the Xenos, so Gears would likely look more 'flat' on the PS3.

The SF2 animated movie was pretty good, not sure if that counts though.
