Geek Pet Hates.

When someone resets the shared router because THEY are having trouble connecting to the Internet. And then do it again and again because it didn't fix the problem.

It really grinds my gears.

Kind of almost nerdy and computery ..

People that ACTUALLY BELIEVE pressing the 'I want to cross' button by a pelican crossing as fast as they can many times WILL make the green man appear quicker than otherwise. Then when eventually the green man appears (at exactly the same time it would have had they pressed once) -- they look at you all-knowing and say 'See .. told ......'

AAAAAARRRGGHH

When someone asks a question and you try and help them but they try and jump about 10 steps ahead of what they think you are going to tell them to do.

People who use wrong/confusing terminology. E.G:- I had a woman earlier asking me about permissions relating to files/folders but called everything a file. Another one is when people refer to a cased computer system as a CPU.

I have loads but don't want to start ranting :D
People need to decide what to call a "PC".

I can't stand it when people call it a "hard drive" or "drive" either. CPU is just as bad too.

Touching any TFT/LCD screen to underline their point. It really does make my scream. And when you can see the colours bleeding and changing it honestly makes me want to punch them to make them stop.

This will only get worse as we see more and more touch screens on devices :(

People ignoring the 'update is available' pop-up on whatever program for months and months and then complaining to me about to fix it...just press OK!! :o

And as mentioned, people who call the case 'the CPU'.

On a serious note I don't have any actual 'hates'. I have no problem with people not knowing anything about computers. I know nothing about cars, or hi-fi equipment, or I dunno... plumbing. But I'd expect people to treat me with respect when I asked for advice on those subjects.

But then I don't work in IT support. :) I imagine that would change my view.

Also, people who always install those gimmicky toolbars on IE. So half their screen is taken up by nonsense.

Also, people who install all sorts of junk and wonder why their PC takes ages to start. My Dad hasn't done a complete reformat for about 5 years, and his XP install is incredibly slow. He refuses to start from scratch because he doesn't want to have to install stuff again.

I think my biggest hate is watching my mrs type 'paypal' or 'ebay' even though i've bookmarked it on her toolbar. It's not only annoying, but bleedin dodgy too. She wouldn't have a clue if it was a fake site or not.

Another pet hate is seeing my mom or dad view firefox in a window which is only taking up half the screen. They don't know what 'maximise' is even though i've told them enough times.

People that use Win+M instead of Win+D which is so much more convenient for your (free) left hand!

;)

you know what they say about people with small hands ;)

But for me it's people who go on dodgy porn sites and agree to install thier crap then expect me to fix it. :/

Ffs it says "XXX porn click here" all over your desktop it;s pretty ****ing obvious what you've been clicking.

If you just say where you got it from this would be easier + I'll ****ing give you a link to a free streaming porn site if it will stop this **** happening for the 99th time!

People who think you're patronising when they are the ones to ask you for help in fixing a problem with their pc and you try to logically rule out all of the major faults, which just happen to be simple like not plugging something in, or ticking a box, but they get insulted, you bugger off and then they find out that it was a simple fault like that was suggested all along and no thank you.

****ES ME OFF. :P Most likely culprits - family members.

My one is people using the term modem for ADSL and Cable kit.

A modem is a device that converts digital to analogue, ADSL and Cable terminal adaptors don't do this, so they aren't modems. And any way a proper modem should make screeching sounds and have a row of lights on the front.

I had some one call me patronising lately, for telling them that a HDMI to USB cable didn't exist.

I tried to explain to them that they're utterly different technologies with completely different "wires" inside that do different things and that a USB CABLE with a HDMI on the other end isn't possible.

Cue them screaming and shouting down the phone that I am indeed the one who is wrong.

This was for a "friend's mum's" laptop, which I set up in the first place, configuring it to work with the TV via a HMDI cable.

She wouldn't accept that a cable I'd given her was the right thing (A HDMI cable) despite me continually reminding her that I set up the laptop in the first place, so it was a different laptop, or she's simply not looking at the right port.

This went on about about 20 minutes, resulting in her rage quiting the phone call.
