Geek Pet Hates.

People who ask me to build a PC.....then somehow think it comes with a free lifetime warranty.

EG// I make a PC then 4 months later I get a phonecall expecting me to come and fix it as it has got a virus or BSOD. The deal was to make them a PC, no free lifetime cover comes with it!!!

I hate people that think when they've connected to a 'wireless network' they automatically think there is internet access. The amount of times I've told people that it doesn't always mean it's internet accessable.

- People who double click on links.
- People who go to point at something on a TFT type monitor and touch it!
- People who install IE toolbars
- People who send and also the people who forward those emails stating that "You must forward this email to 45 of your friends or else you will die" type emails
- When people ask you to solve a problem over the phone about a program you have never used before and expect you to know exactly what they are seeing on their screen.

These sum up mine quite nicely. My dad does most of the ones mentioned so far.

Oh god been there myself, i have a ahem 'mate' who i built a pc for and it ran pretty sweet when it left here only a day of two after it kept going wrong, anyway he came back here only i found out he went and fiddled with the board.

Seems after watching me he thought it was easy, ok to me it was but not to the average joe, anyway i fixed it and it's been fine since though he did treat me as some sort of technical service afterwards, i think he got the hint after i stopped answering to his whims. :D

What really winds me up is how they think i enjoy doing it for free, like it's some sort of misguided privilege that i get to help them out.

Riight lets see how much a call out would cost them in real terms. :D

A person who looks over your right hand shoulder at the monitor and you feel the air coming out of there nostrils on too the back of your hand you are controlling the mouse with.

Not just me then!!! irrates me beyond belief :D

In line with things that annoy you geek wise, people in so called tech jobs who dont know what they are doing.

Perfect example

$0.002 = 0.002c

Oh my, sheer class :)

I have 'repaired' some computers with browsers similar to below. I say 'repaired' because it pretty much involved me formatting the drive an reinstalling Windows.

When people think that they are immune to viruses and blame you when they do get one.

That and the 99.9% of users who think they are immune to viruses just because they have anti-virus software installed, the fact that they last updated it six months ago doesn't make a difference does it?

When people ask what you're studying and you reply "engineering", you're 80% likely to get one of the following:

  • Can you show me how to replace my tyre?
  • Oh my grandad's into steamtrains too!
  • How often do I need to get my MOT done?
  • My engine's making this weird knocking sound, what is it?
  • So you know all about PC's right?

That's my background too, although I chose it to remind me of home whilst I'm away at the moment.

Yeah, I see that quite often. Usually something like Norton Antivirus 2004 30-day Trial running in the system tray. The reality is that not only have they been unprotected against viruses and stuff it's that Norton's presence on the system probably been one of things slowing it down. The amount of crap you get with it is silly like email protection, IM protection, surfing protection, and so on.

All i got to say is OMFG, i try to be very carefull about installing toobars, goodbar for example would have me kicking myself:mad: I hate them.

Oh yeah, and people who don't re-read what they've written. This can be forums, emails, texts, anything. It's as if people just vomit a load of text onto the screen with absolutely no punctuation or spell-checking and expect everyone to understand it. And if you complain you get labelled a "grammar Nazi" or something.
