Lord hopes I've posted this in the right section, being my first post here. :L

So, my budget is £800, maybe pushing it to £1000. I want a gaming PC that will last me more than 2/3 years without getting outdated quickly and want to play games among the likes of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Crysis 3 and Watchdogs.
I have a more preferable approach to AMD HD Radeon graphics cards and Cooler Master cases. I DO NOT intend to overclock my CPU!

So, geeks... Build me a spec and a price. ;) (please :))

Self build: Yes. OS undecided yet, but I have both Windows 7, Debian and Ubuntu, so it's a choice of those, I will probably go for 7 and dual boot it at a later stage. Already have a HD monitor, a standard mouse and keyboard for now but when I can afford it will buy a nice gaming set. :D

A few pointers towards what I'm generally looking for:
CPU - between 3-4ghz
GPU - 3gb GDDR5, preferably Radeon HD
RAM - 16gb 2x8gb
WATER/LIQUID COOLER!!! (for CPU)

Hi,

I've had a go at this:

This is what you wanted:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus HD 7950 DirectCU II TOP V2 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £239.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4670 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £179.99
1 x Gigabyte H87-HD3 Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £80.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD120BW) £79.99
1 x Cooler Master CM-690 II Lite Dominator Case - Black £62.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £53.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £51.95
1 x OCZ ZS Series 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £49.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H60 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler *Manufacturer Refurbished Unit - 90 Day Guarantee £35.99
1 x OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99
Total : £870.35 (includes shipping : £13.75).

You won't need 16GB for gaming, if you do in the future you can always buy another 2 x 4 kit later on..

you don't need a big cooler if your not Overclocking so thats why the H60 is there, small WC unit, great for stock frequency.

This is what i would do with the money:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC Twin Frozr Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £209.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £197.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £106.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD120BW) £79.99
1 x Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Windowed Case - Black £69.95
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual CHannel Kit (PV38G213C1K) £59.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £51.95
1 x OCZ ZS Series 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £49.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H80 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler *Manufacturer Refurbished Unit - 90 Day Guarantee £35.99
1 x OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99
Total : £895.81 (includes shipping : £12.50).

670 instead of the 7950, on par IMO.

CPU ready to overclock (this ability will uphold resale value even if you don't overclock).

I personally like to spec with something i said in mind... when i built my first rig 3 years ago i said i wouldn't overclock but now i've switched out all of my parts (bar RAM and HDD) and am OCing my chip to hell and back (figuratively).

That's a great spec you've built there for the price, thanks for taking the time to do that. I would probably go with an SSD with a faster write speed, as I will probably do a bit of writing to and from it, but I agree with what you have said about the 8gb RAM, it does seem to make sense and as you said; I can always upgrade it if need be.

Out of curiosity I did some benchmark research of the i5 vs the 8350, and while the AMD is better for price, the i5 is better for single thread tasks and slightly faster for gaming and graphic programs, so I am thinking it'll be a better value for the money all in all.

Loving that graphics card too, not a single issue with that. :o

On a final note, how does the PSU perform? I was advised to go for one closer to 800-1000w, but it all depends on how much power the PC will actually draw.

Thanks again for your help, there's a real machine there for the price, really appreciate it! :)

Thanks, the only reason i went with that SSD is it is in stock whereas the one i wanted to spec is still on pre-order, the Samsung EVO 120GB.

I think the i5 will be better for you overall..well worth the extra money.

That PSU will be more than enough.. Ill be suprised if you see more than 350W power draw so that PSU will be more than fine. It's a good make too, i actually had that as my first PSU (only changed because i needed modular for my smaller case)..

The only reason you'd need a bigger PSU is if you were going Xfire or overclock which this system won't allow you to do anyway. :)

Thanks for your help Doomedspeed! I'm just doing a small amount of tweaking to the drives and the case in that list, but otherwise I'm definitely going with what you've researched on for me. :D

Due to the GPU offer you'll even get free P&P.

I don't see any point having a CPU cooler if your not overclocking to be honest, unless you found the stock cooler to be noisy, in that case a cheap quiet after market air cooler will be fine. Especially seems a needless risk getting a refurbed water cooler.

Still think he may as well see how he gets along with the stock cooler, but the Evo cooler is nice and quiet and would still be well under budget.
