I am a bit unaware of how mobile gpus perform. Recently I have been looking for a nice middle spec laptop to give some mobility to my computing and gaming needs. I havn't been a fan of laptops in the past but recent laptop hardware is far more worth getting than it has been (performance, price and heat issues etc).

I have been looking for a sensible i3 laptop with either a 5650 or 330m/335m graphics chip but the stocks of such laptops seem to have dried out recently.

There do seem to be some laptops with 310m chips within my price range (anything less than £650 -> there is a £640 VAIO with a 330m gpu but it has five weeks!!! delivery). If I get a 310m chip, would I be dissapointed with the performance at all? I would like to play games such as WoW, CoD and killing floor (which runs OK on a gma 950), I am not worried about particularly high graphics settings though. My desktop only has a pair of 9800gt cards so I am not used to the best performance as it stands anyway - my desktop has no problem running any current game on middle or low image quality settings (bfbc2 with no AA but textures and view distances set fairly high still runs at over 60fps most of the time).

Should I go for a 310m chip laptop now? Does anybody have any recommendations for other graphics chips, does anybody have a 310m right now that they can tell me about?

I am also presuming that the lowest current spec mobile i3 cpu (i3 330 I think) is enough to run pretty much any game, would I be correct in that assumption? Or should I restrict my purchase to something with a beefier cpu?

I was thinking of investing in a beefy gpu for my desktop but I should probably wait a year and update the whole rig at once; hence why I want a laptop instead - of equivalent price range (I would have been getting an insane desktop gpu or there would be no point upgrading)

Thanks.

edit:
what about older chips that have more performance than the 310m? I wouldn't be worrying about directx 11 for a laptop.

OK, I found: "Dell Inspiron 15R Laptop, Intel Core i3, 500GB, 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM with 15.6 Inch Display"

The product page on the site I am looking at lists a 5650 1GB as the graphics chip, yay.

The laptop is within my budget by a little bit (which is good, looking at the specs).

Personally, I hate dell computers. But I guess all manufacturers are more-or-less the same when it comes to laptops (just as bad as each other) - so that isn't really putting me off. Also, the retailer that I have found it on is very good with returns. I have also noticed that no google product search will find their site, which is worrying - what other good deals am I missing :( I only found this laptop by randomly browsing different retailers.

Annoyingly, I can't find any reviews for the same model. If I google the exact product code I find reviews and retail sites with the exact product code but weaker graphics chips, isn't that illegal? I noticed that most laptop retailers do the same thing and you have to look into fine detail to discover the true specs (or they simply don't say, but as I discovered that doesn't mean they will have the same specs as others with the same product code!).

I understand that the supply of graphics chips may fluctuate, so that could explain the diversity that laptops with the same product code suffer from.
