GeForce 480 or 560?

480 is faster. However, it is also LOUD (very), HOT, and pulls a ton of power.

If you don't care about any of that, then you'll get some stonking performance from the 480.

If you do, go for the 560, it's cool, quiet, much lighter on the PSU, and OC's like a champion.

Thanks fot that HeX, not so fussed about heat (case cooling is pretty good), don't mind a bit of noise but don't really want it too loud.

560 has just 1 gig of memory which is not enough for many modern games. you need 2gig version or radeon 6950, which is a better card.

Sorry, but that is utter tripe.

I run 1920x1080 with AA in all games, and am yet to encounter anything my 560 can't run well...

I had a 480 before my 560, and honestly in games I can't tell the difference, what I can tell is the lack of noise and heat.

There's no denying the 6950/6970 is also a great card, but there's also nothing wrong with the 560 either, the 1GB mem really doesn't effect anything unless you are planning on going for a multi screen setup with a huge resolution.

480 is loud, but only relatively. If you have had a GTX 280 previously you will know what to expect. And if you use headphones then does it really matter?

480 has more RAM, benches the same as a 570, [if you are lucky] can be OC'd to the level of a stock 580. Your call, but the 480 is the superior card in every way but noise and power consumption.

EDIT: To the poster above, it really depends on the games you are playing. There is no doubt that as time passes, RAM requirements are slowly creeping upwards (there is another thread doing the rounds about this - maybe someone will be kind enough to post a link). Would you rather have more or less RAM?

I've hit over 1gb before at 1900x1200.

If you can live with the heat and the noise (Depending on if you get one with a custom cooler) the 480 will make the 560 look rather silly.

I would have bought a 480 my self, but my pc is in a loft conversion, so the components need to be naturally cool.

The 480 would roast its self to death in my pc, so I went with the 5870 in the end.

Thanks everyone, currently leaning towards the 480 atm, now tempted by one of the Gigabytes as it looks like it has better cooling and might be quieter :)

I'd go fot GTX480 Special Edition, definitively cooler- mine never goes above 70C, almost all the time stays at 63-66C! And cooler is not that loud as in ocuk value gtx480, and even my hd5870 was louder!

get the gigabyte SE it is NOT loud near silent, It Maxs out at 81c - 82c and im running fine on a 550W PSU VERY VERY good card IMO :D Do it !

funny my asus gtx 480s only reach 74 to 75c max in games fan speed only gets to 50% which isnt loud my 5970 was louder, have them in a rv02 white. That was also when the weather was hot for a change they run a little cooler now the weathers cooled off.

You lot must have bloomin' noisy rigs if you think the 480SE isn't loud and is 'silent', is all I can say.

I had an SE, and it was LOUD under load. Easily the noisiest component in my rig.

Though it is quieter than the stock 480. But then so are helicopters.

Each to their own.

ah my fan never goes as high as 50% so i guess thats why i get warmer, + i guess it depends on other components and there heat, i do have mine over clocked @ stock i would imagine i would drop 7-10c

I am running them @ stock but i have overclocked them to 840 @1.050v on the core clock cant remember the memory etc temps were 78 to 79c. you cant realy compare the fan speeds between the 2 cards as you have the SE

yea thats about right 81-82 is the real top end as in 45 mins of crysis 2 but i would say 78-79 is an average

whats funny about my cards is that the stock settings for both my cards have different voltages which i think are pretty high one is at 1.050 2nd cards 1.088v at default clocks i haft to force them to 1.000v in afterburner

480 is the best performing card out of those 2, the 560 is less performing but might make up on noise and heat.

/thread.

If your PSU is upto the task the 480SE is faster than 560 and has more memory so is a better purchase. The SE model addresses the heat and noise issues of the referance cards.

Over time the 480 will draw ever further ahead due to the larger memory onboard.

In games the 480SE is not loud. A referance card is a fair bit louder however. Under torture tests 480's (like most cards) are LOUD.
