Hey guys,

Very noob question here and im not sure why I havn't thought of it before, but can I get HDMI using my GeForce 580 GTX?

I have 2 EVGA 580's on SLI.

Also if so would I need a DVI to HDMI cable or a simple HDMI cable?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. Most, if not all 580's have HDMI outputs.

My EVGA GTX580 SC has a mini HDMI output and came with a mini to full size adaptor. I'm running my monitor off of it now!

As far as I know, there are all manner of converters and adaptors available. HDMI-DVI, DVI-HDMI. Have a look around, I'm sure they're not difficult to find.

overclockers do the adapters relatively cheap

I have to be honest. I have no idea what any of it is. As far as I'm aware it's tv technobabble.

I am currently linked through a DVI cable but everyone bangs on about HD so I figured perhaps that was better. Is that not the case?

Also just to add I'm using a benq 120mhz 22" monitor if that helps in anything

DVI is fine for monitors. HDMI is very similar to DVI electronically. One difference is that HDMI also carries audio so is useful for TVs.

I'm using a mini to full HDMI cable at the moment to connect my PC up to a 40" TV. I couldn't use an adapter as it was too wide and wouldn't actually fit because the side of the case (the port being too far to the edge of the card bracket) was in the way. In the end I got a cable which you can get online for next to nothing. I think I paid 2-3 quid for a 2M mini to full HDMI lead.

a HDMI cable won't support 3D / 120hz so don't bother, DVI is better in this respect

HDMI is for TV's as it supports audio, DVI is for computers as it supports higher resolutions / 3D / 120hz without audio

Thanks dude looks like I won't need a new cable then! It was just a thought while I was playing skyrim thinking "damn its too dark, maybe I need HD".

Thanks again

no, turn up your brightness !
make sure your desktop resolution settings are using 120mhz.
You will probably find you are already running a "HD" res.

have you got a 3d monitor by any chance and you don't realise it ?

I bought a 3D compatible monitor, it was suggested with the 3D vision pack on OCUK. I used the 3D stuff for about 2 hours (throughout a few days) and realised it was garbage and never used it since.

That said I do have everything on 120mhz.

Also yea Skyrim is a little better with the brightness up but there we go. The initial thought of HD wasn't because of brightness but I figured perhaps it would enhance the images slightly... Just a thought :)
