Geforce 6800 Overclock Issues

Hello there.

I recently purchased an Asus V9999 which runs the 6800 chipset. I have managed to unlock the extra 4 pipelines and 1 vertex shader successfully. The next stage I wanted to complete was overclocking the card. I've download coolbits and riva tuner and either can be used to alter the core and memory frequencies. After upping my frequencies to 385 core & 820 on the memory, I rebooted & checked the monitoring tool within riva tuner. The memory frequency had changed but the core remained at 324Mhz, which is what it ran at out of the box.

Any ideas why this is happening?

I thought it may just be an error, but on running 3dmark01, my score only increased by 4! So, it must definitely still be running at the stock core frequency.

You need to set the 2D clock, 3D clock and Low Power 3D clock to the same speed, to be able to change the low power 3d mode in Rivatuner you need to enable it in the expert/advanced section.

This stops the card from going to the low power 3D speed when overclocked which the card does as it will get too low core voltage.
 
Using Rivatuner - Unclick 23Apply these settings at startup" - then up the OC to whatever you want - test then apply them, do it for both, then click "Apply these settings at startup" - do it for both - it should say what speed your oc is when clicking "apply these settings at startup".
You might want to Voltmod your card aswell if your temps are low - I havent started ocing my ram yet but on normal volts I could run at 380 - if i went to 400 i got sparklies - after voltmodding to 1.5v core im upto 440 atm im going to try 460.

I was messing around with it yesterday and de-selected the option in riva tuner to allow different 2d & 3d clock frequencies. This seemed to actually allow me to change the core frequency when I couldn't before. I managed to get it run stable at 380 & 8xx something, can't remember the exact figure for the memory. I tried 400 & 900, but got artifacts. Anyway, I thought i'd run 3dmark01 to see what effect the OC was having on my scores. To my amazement it came back at over 2000 lower than my non-overclocked score! What's going on there?

I got worried, so uninstalled Riva Tuner & the Nvidia drivers. Have reinstalled the drivers and riva tuner, and unlocked the pipelines again. Ran 3dmark01 and the score is around 200 less than previously.

Why would an overclock give me significantly worse 3dmark results? Is it cos of the "allow seperate 2d & 3d values" option?
 
I think the voltages are too slow for your overclock - so it throttles down to your lower 3d performance - you can voltmod your bios to 1.5 (0.3v's higher) this should let you overclock your core past 400.

then the easiest way would be to search for a BIOS modding guide or ill briefly explain in abit :)

o btw youll need a floppy drive to flash the bios to the card

im currently at 430/920 with a 1.5v mod

Nope - But I do at 460 - so theres a middle-ground inbetween where i should be.
My memorys a lot worse than yours however though - only at 810 atm - will try 830.

as far as i know yes, ill make you a 1.5v bios now if you want.

to flash it with a floppy disc :
1 create a bootable MS-DOS floppy disc
2 download the nvflash tool : http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=896
3 copy the nvflash to the floppy disc
4 copy the bios to the floppy disc [your 1.5v bios]
5 reboot the pc, enter the bios and set the floppy drive to be the first boot device. reboot again
6 when the DOS prompt appears you are ready to flash the bios.
to do this type nvflash -5 -6 newBIOS.rom . you will then be asked if you want to update the bios so tap y. when the command prompt returns simply reboot and set the HDD back to being the first boot device


DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG DONT BLAME ME :p



edit : the card is the Asus V9999 128mb AGP isnt it? (just checking for the bios)

er a lot of cards dont actually support 1.5v....

check the bios info in rivatuner first
eg:
$1100020100 Voltage level 0 : 1.10V, VID 00000000b
$1100020101 Voltage level 1 : 1.20V, VID 00000001b
$1100020102 Voltage level 2 : 1.40V, VID 00000010b

you will need one of those to say 1.50v
and 1.5v is a lot of voltage to give to these cards, especially if it gives an actual voltage of 1.5, instead of .07v less.
 
Depends on the cooler - 1.5v is fine on my Leadtek 6800nu, it's unlikely that the card can handle 1.4v then suddenly BANG cant handle 0.1V more than that, everycard is different afterall.
 
Well im fine here and so are a lot of other people :D - I suppose there is a risk but there is a reward also, for me the risk is too minimal and the rewards are worthy of doing it.
