Hey guys!,

I need some advice guys! So I am leaving the uk for 10 months going out to New Zealand.. So i thought I would get my self a gaming rig. Ive been looking at different laptops... but I found one with a 675MX for around £1500 and another for a 680M for around £1750. Would you say that the extra 250 is worth it?

What do you reckon?

when are you leaving? I'd try and get a laptop with the 8970M in if i'm honest! I think there has been one announced already, so maybe wait?

Performance wise, the 675MX is about equal to desktop's GTX650Ti Boost, whereas the 680M is around between desktop's GTX660 and GTX660Ti performance. So the situation is a bit like the desktop's GTX670 paying £100 less getting 90-95% of GTX680's performance; in the laptop's case with the GTX675MX you are getting 85-90% of the GTX680M's performance for £250 less.

IMO the performance difference between the two is not big enough to justify the £250 extra...you'd be better off going for the 675MX getting a 480GB or 500GB with that kind of money :p

With the GTX 680M, you will have a gaming rig.

With the GTX 675M, you will have something that just isn't really good enough.

Before taking any advice on the Radeon 8970M, google "Enduro Graphic Switching Throttling". Unless you are going for an Alienware that offers manual switching to the gaming GPU, my advice would be not to touch any Radeon powered gaming laptop.

Also, if you can wait a short while yet, the 700M series is due for release. Of course, these will be relatively expensive but it may push the price of existing GTX 600 inventory down also.

Hey guys, Thanks for the replys.

I am currently leaving on the 4th *June*. So I doubt im going to be able to get a Haswell CPU/700 series GPU, I would really love too becuase it kinda makes me feel made spending this amount of money then a few weeks later its gunna be old tech.

Still not sure what im going to do either the 675MX or 680M.

here is the current spec of the machine im lookin at getting:
Case: clevo p170em - 17.3" 1920x1080 Screen NVIDIA Optimus Premium Onkyo 2.1 Speakers Backlit Keyboard HDMI Output 2.0MP Webcam 300Mb s Wireless & Bluetooth

From what I have read, there will be not a great deal of gain on the CPU processing power of things with Haswell. The big fuss will be with Haswells integrated graphics (irrelevant to someone getting a high end gaming GPU). If you are going to go the Clevo route, then that leaves you with no (sensible) option other than the Nvidia GPU's. As big a rip off as they are, i implore you to go for the GTX 680M. I recently had a Clevo with the HD 7970M. When it worked, it was just powerful enough to offer acceptable enough gaming performance. Now the HD7970, is a much more powerful card than the GTX 675MX, thus the 675 just wont cut it in my opinion. You are already spending a lot on your gaming laptop, it would be a shame to scrimp on the one item that will really transform the quality of your gaming experience.

Also, you may want to hold off as long as possible due to the realease of the 700 series. I had this lined up in my box to replace my RMAs HD 7907 Clevo:

Last week, it was reduced by 120GBP. I would expect plenty more 'offers' to come around as the realease of the new gen equipment nears. I may still bite at the laptop above as like you, I have a time restriction before I will next 'need' (want) a gaming laptop. But whilst I dont care about Haswell, I really would like to get some GTX780M action. Performance equivalent of a desktop 660ti they say, possibly reaching desktop GTX 680 levels with some driver maturation.

Hey there, haswell will be launching next month as will the new generation of graphics cards.

Get a haswell/780M machine, the 780M looks to be a GTX680/770 in a notebook.

Well, the 700M series are just 600M rebadged (same with AMD HD8000M being HD7000M rebadge) but with higher clock...and considering mobile GPU are not retailed individually, I think laptops with 600MX series GPU are simply just gonna disappear, rather than price drop.

But yea...you may be able to get a 775M graphic laptop (essentially a rebadged GTX680M) at a lower price.

The benchmarks when they come will not lie. From what I have seen, certainly the GTX 780M, is a good 30% improvement over the GTX 680M. Perhaps not worth upgrading for but certainly worth waiting for if someone is currently without a gaming laptop......and that is what I intend to do. Whoever is fastest to include the GTX 780M in a laptop configuration, whether it be Clevo, MSI or Alienware, will probably get my custom. Haswell, I am indifferent about.

But to the OPs question. I think that if he is in anyway passionate about gaming and he ends up opting for the cheaper 675MX solution, that he will be kicking himself for a very long time afterwards. The 675MX offers just 60% of the performance of the 680M. I appreciate that money doesnt grow on trees but in my view dropping that much performance for the sake of a 200GBP save on a 1400 GBP purchase dont make sense.

It might be cheaper to get it abroad. Check price comparisons and maybe look into buying when you are over there!

I am in no place to talk about mobile GPUs, as with all these things I'd look at benchmarks for the games you play and see which one you prefer the look of.

Looking at this site, the 8970M beats the 680M by quite a margin overall. But figures aren't everything for sure.

Southern Hemisphere countries tend to be much more expensive for consumer electronic goods than Europe/North America.

If he goes for the 8970 in a Clevo laptop, he will have to run the gauntlet of AMD drivers and their graphic switiching program, Enduro. I gave it a try with a Clevo P170EM with an HD7970 and although great performance is possible, the likliehood for immense headaches is very high.....

......steer well clear off!

I'd avoid the 7970m (not really sure about 8xxx but assuming same potential problems) if your off somewhere and just want it to work with less of a chance of potential issues.

GTX675m (not mx) is ok for gaming at the moment but its giving up pretty much everything its got to handle the latest games at 1920x1080 with ultra settings and you'd have to turn down the AA or use FXAA really. The GTX675MX isn't significantly faster so same story there.

I've got the non-MX GTX675m myself and its just been flawless tbh and a lot more capable than people give it credit for but at the end of the day as I said its pretty much maxed out handling the latest games, next round of games it probably won't cut it.

That's expensive. You can get a Lenovo Y500 with a 3630 I7 2.4 with a GT650m that is essentially the same core GPU that will clock too 1150mhz and 2800mhz men for £750. For and out and out gaming laptop GTX680 to make it future proof

Well ive done it guys! Ive ordered my laptop here are the specs:

A veritable beast of a laptop. Once you have forgotten about the damage that it has done to your wallet, you will be very pleased that you opted for the 680 over the 675....especially 2-3 years in the future when you find yourself still being able to play games that the 675 just wouldnt be able to deliver on.

Now the fight is on for you to find a bag for carrying a 17" laptop (more money). Be warned, mot 17" laptop bags on the market aern't suitable for the laptop that you have.

Oh yeah, and fingers crossed your power brick is good. I hear that almost half of them are emtting high pitched whining sounds....annoying as hell and a sign of poor capacitor health.
