GeForce 7600 GS with old system, possible?

Last month I replaced my Ti4200(broken fan) with a Radeon 9550 and games I used to play on my Ti4200 are very slow on the 9550, so I was thinking of upgrading my video and go for the GeForce 7600 GS (AGP) (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-092-LT).

My question is: Will my old socket 478 P4/2.0 with 1GB RAM "handle" this card?

PS: Also, if you believe there's a better, cheaper card I should go for, let me know :P

Thanks.

should be fine, I'm on an XP3200 with 1gig ram, when my 9800pro died I bought a 7600GS and its been fine, it might be bottlenecked a bit by your processor but I'm way too behind on current technology to be sure.

Thanks for the reply mate. When you say bottlenecked, you mean I won't take full advantage of its power?

Pretty much.

In essence, the CPU won't be able to tell the GPU what to do fast enough to fully use the power of the card.

If it is at all possible, consider overclocking your CPU.

Either way, depending on the resolutions you play, then the card could be fine/overkill for your system. If you want to play with high levels of AA/Af then the card is fine.

You could go with something like a cheap X800xt second hand, or a 9800 Pro second hand.

If you are playing at very low resolutions (1024x768) you could consider getting a 7300 AGP instead. Be warned though, that is about half the speed of the 7600, but I am not sure how much your CPU will limit a 7600 GS.

I've just put a 7600gt in my aging dell P4 2.8Ghz workstation.

It's a good combo, plays anything I throw at it ok. I'm not expecting miracles, but it sure does beat the fx5200 card it replaces. So, based on this, the 7600gs will be ok for you. Hope this helps. :)

<sigh of relief> :)

Thanks guys, I was pondering a complete upgrade, glad I'll have no problems, because yes, at the end of the day, I don't play a lot and when I do, only at 1024x768 ;)

6800GT is massively faster than a 7600GS.

Personally, I'd look around for a 2nd hand 6600GT or Radeon 9800Pro, for about £30+ as it's hardly worth spending much more on 2ghz P4.

Just for the record, I did purchase this card but apparently, my motherboard doesn't support it. I tried drivers v93.71 if I'm not wrong and Windows rebooted upon start-up. All other drivers, when tested with 3DMark03, produced a horrible picture with a lot of blueish/reddish colours and awful picture. All this, despite trying several solutions found on the web such as changing the AGP aperture size from BIOS(windows was very very slow) and enabling fast write, always from BIOS.

I'm afraid I have to settle down for an older card.

NO Problem

i've gone from
geforce 3Ti200 to
Geforce 4Ti200 to
Gforce 6600GT
Gforce 7600GT
all on P4 system (mobo sis chipset at that!!!)
And NOT seen any signe of slow down compared to other systems, PCI-E or faster chip-set... blah...

What exactly is Bottle neck'ing?>?

If possible I would look around for an X800XT, if you could find one, there gonna be preety cheap, and they beat a 7600GT, 6800GT and in allot of cases 6800Ultra too, but then again with an X800XT there is an disadvantage with that card, and its that it dont have SM3.0 like the nvidia cards.
