currently running a pair of 7800 gt in sli what would the performance difference be running 1 8800gts any idea roughly what score in 3d mark 06 a 8800gts scores think im getting 5000 odd with mine and would a corsair 600 watt psu be sufficent for one of these many thanks
 
I just got 9521 in 3D Mark 06 with the spec in my sig (8800GTS is running at stock.)

Overclocking the graphics card 10,000+ is passed easy as pie.
 
thanks mate what i was expected just wanted to hear it from the horses mouth a 600 watt corsair power supply be ok with on of those thanks a lot

I'm using a 520W Corsair for mine, it's by far more than enough for a machine like this. :)
 
Thanks a lot guys get meself one tomorrow i suppose a 8800 wouldnt be using as many watts as a pair of 7800s what cards you got

correct, 520w corsair is more than enough, it can give up to 480w on the 12v rails.

tom on here has a hiper 580w running a x2900xt and those hiper psus put out around 370w on the 12v rails.

doubt anyone would need more than a corsair 520w unless they gonna be going dual gfx card with quad core.

and considrering the corsair 520 can be had for 50 odd quid its a very good psu to go for.

Well firstly what resolution do you play in, and do you like to use antialiasing? That'll let you know if you need the 320MB model or the 640MB model, personally I use lots of antialiasing in 1680x1050 so I have the 640MB model.

I'm also guessing you'll want some recommendations for brands. I would avoid XFX and Asus and go for something like BFG, EVGA or OCZ as they have great warranties and their customer service is the best.

Check out Leadtek etc. too if you want to save a bit of money.

I'd go with the 8800GTS 320MB for that resolution, and I'm not sure exactly what increase in frames you'd get as it depends on the game and what settings you use etc.

Needless to say though, it'd be a big performance increase.
 
If 3dmark scores are what you are after then bear in mind you need a good (multicore) cpu as well.

I've got a 8800GTS but it doesn't get anywhere near 10k in 3dmark06 as I only have a single core cpu.

I'll second this. I have built 2 systems around the 8800GTS this year. one with a mildy clocked C2D and the other with reasonably clocked Opteron.

I have used riva tuner to conservativley clock the 8800's, and both systems have broken 10000 3d06.

When i built the systems, only the 640mb cards where available, If i was doing the same now, i would use the 320mb card and save some cash as neither of the systems use the resolutions that require that extra memory.
 
I just bought the OCUK 8800GTS 320Mb and its a bloody bargain at that price mate! Two years warranty might sound little but imho you don't really need more as in 2 years time an 8800 will be slow and if you really want to replace it you should be able to pick up a cheap 2nd hand card somewhere.

The fan on the 8800gts is so nice and quiet my old HIS1950 card had the rattling fan etc so this is such a bonus faster card and quieter.

I can warmly recommend the OCUK 320! Or if you can wait a bit the EVGA on pre order seems to be at a good price too, but I would get the cheaper one if I had to buy another card.
