GeForce 8800

Hi there

Well you need a watercooling kit to use the BFG watercooled card.

But if you already have a decent kit with the correct fittings then go for it. It uses the dangerden block so if very good quality. :)

What he's saying is you cant just 'plonk' in a 8800GTX with a watercooling block without connect watercooling tubes to it. So if you dont have a watercooling kit (i.e Pump etc.) you won't be able to use the card. The card doesn't come with its own little watercooling unit all built into the little waterblock.

Also be aware that if you slot the 8800GTX onto your motherboard without it being successfully hooked up to a watercooling unit it WILL void your warrenty and that will be £600 down the plug-hole.

The watercooled version needs a watercooling loop!

If you don't know this....then don't get one.

Get the standard one its a safer bet. :D

Also the fan on the 8800GTS/X is very effective and much better than the fans you get on the X series for ATI...

Agreed the cooling solution on the 8800 series is silent and very effective even with high clocks. :)

I find it hard to believe that the 8800 series are 'Silent'

Don't forget that different people have different levels at which they think is loud. If the guy who upgraded to a GTS previously had a FX5500 (for example) then the difference is going to be quite major. But if he's upgraded to a GTS from a X1950XTX then he's not going to be complaining one bit. And in fact the GTX are completely silent in 2D mode and in 3D mode are normally unhearable above the game sound.

Indeed!

Hmmm, of course if your gaming theres gonna be bullets and explosions but I wonder how the sound is for non gaming 3D i.e Vista Aero interface etc. Would be good to read some reviews on the noise levels on the 8800 series (if anyone has any handy?)

In the era of power and performance per watt, noise is just as important as any other metric. NVIDIA has managed to outfit all of its high end GPUs with relatively quiet coolers and the 8800 series is no different. We tested the noise level of each of these cards while the system was idle, and we also took the ambient noise level of the room (with the system off) for reference. We found that under stress, the cards didn't experience any extra noise from fan speed-ups. For reference, the ambient noise level of the room while testing was 38.1 dB.

Cheers for that, what diameter is the fan (80mm, 92mm?)

[edit] any 'load' noise charts? :D

I've had my 8800gtx for a week now and can comment on it's noise levels in my P180 rig (all Nexus 120mm fans, Seasonic 650w, Scythe Infinity).

The card is silent when not under load, ie in Windows etc. For standard games that don't place too much of a strain on the card, it's inaudible.

The only time the fans speeds up is in games like Oblivion that stress the card.. that said, you need to turn HDR on and run in ultra-high resolutions to get the fan to rev up.

At it's loudest it's not an annoying sound, more like a whooshing of air.

Overall, it's NOT for a 100% silent rig, but the amazing performance from the 8800gtx series is worth a bit of pain. These cards will be very popular amongst the perofrmance/enthusiast crowd, so I expect to see some 3rd party cooling solutions pretty soon anyway.
