I've been holding out for the XPS 17 Laptop to include the option of a 1080p screen, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon, so I may go for the XPS 15 instead.

The main difference between these two Laptop are the Graphics Cards:

XPS 17 includes a NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 445M Graphics card, whereas the XPS 15 includes the GeForce GT 435m.

So I was wondering, is the GT 435M any good? and how does it compare to the 445M?

I've looked at benchmarking sites but its confusing as there are things that don't make sense such as cards with lower numbers performing worse than cards with higher numbers? Do these companies not release cards in chronological order with the higher numbers being the newer cards?

Thank you in advanced for any help

The 4** shows you what generation it is. The higher the number, the better tech it has. The *35 shows you the performance level. The higher this is, the higher the performance it gives.

Basically, the 435m performs worse then the 445m, and does by quite a fair bit, but the 435m is already a pretty good GPU for a laptop, it will be able to play a few games on medium/low settings no problem.

Okay thank you both for the help. It says it compares to the ATI Radeon HD 5650 so this gives me some indication on where it "stands".. so to speak.

Since I've had a terrible terrible PC over the past 7 years or so (Athlon XP 2000+ with Radeon 7000, which was the first ATI graphics card I believe!) I've not really kept up with all this and the rate of change in graphics cards.

So, since these laptops cannot be upgraded in the future, if I was to go for the 435m, is it likely to still be able to play future games in a couple/few years or so on low settings? Or will it be totally useless by then?

Similarily, is a 1080p screen and 435m a good trade off rather than a 1600x900 screen and a 445m?

The xps 17 will get a pair of 1080p screens towards the end of jan. Latest, start of feb. One will be a high colour/contrast model, the other will be a 120hz 3d capable model.

*edit* It will also get a system refresh as well. With the sandybridge i7 quads/duals that have optimus and a few small tweaks elsewhere.

Just a heads-up. :)

Oh really? That's good news then! I've been waiting for months and when I called and asked Dell a couple of days ago, they gave the impression it wasn't going to be for ages. Out of curiosity how did you find out?
I'd be silly not to wait a little longer then. Hopefully it doesn't affect the price to get the new SandyBridge i7 as I've heard they perform a lot better than the current gen.

i've got one in my xps15, only got a 720p screen mind you but it plays gta4, bc2 and a lot of other games at pretty reasonably settings without any problems :) (bc2 maxed out minus hbao, only 2xaa i think)

I'm good friends will dell xps sales/tech support thanks to the reliability of my xps m1730. ;):p

When the new revision comes out I will hopefully be retiring this old beast for an xps17/m17x r3. So you're not the only one waiting.

Well thanks for the tip. Otherwise would have ended up getting the XPS 15 and then been very annoyed when I realised the XPS 17 had been updated! Haha

In your opinion will these updates change the pricing of the laptop?
