Evening all

Decided to go NVidia as vega seems a disappointment and I don't want to wait any longer.

Thinking of buying the GeForce GTX 1070 Mini. Any reason not to pair this with

(Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 , 2500k, 2 x ssd , 2 x mechanical disks, XFX 650W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply. )

Will also be purchasing a Dell S2716DG from elsewhere.

Thanks

It should work with that motherboard, just make sure you're running the latest bios just in case. Other than a little bottlenecking it should be fine, with the knowledge that when you do upgrade mobo/cpu then you'll be unlocking more performance :)

Okay well some are more reasonable than I thought they'd be. At least AMD got this one right?
Not really. Price is just for early adopters then goes up. Hence why the OP and others (See the Vega thread) are going to Green. 1070 is better value for money/heat/power.

Some of them would always go green - even if Vega was £300 they would say the same:

Look at the review - the reference Vega56 is slightly quicker than a £400+ MSI GTX1070 Gaming X(not the cheaper Gaming version) overall ,whilst consuming 38W more. It actually consumes less power than some of the RX580 cards!

At the initial £380 it was a reasonable deal, not at £400+ though. It also shows how pointless the air cooled Vega64 is though, its only slightly faster whilst consuming 100W more.

Im tempted by the 1070 mini , i dont get why its a fair bit cheaper than other cards.
The clocks seems similar if not the same as others , would it just be down to limited overclocking due to cooling/noise ?

It is because it uses a more compact PCB than other GTX1070 cards so is cheaper to make:

This is an MSI GTX1070 Gaming X:

Cheers for that , didnt think a shrink would make such a price difference.
Ive just took the plunge and will be with me tomorrow hopefully.
Happy to report back info to anyone on the fence

Cheers

Also considering getting a 1070 mini to pair with my i5 2500k. If I can get a reasonable price for my XFX RX480 GTR then may consider an upgrade.

Whilst not an AMD fanboy, I have a preference for them but even I think they dropped the ball here. In recompense, may consider a Ryzen 1600 or 1700 to pair it with so let me know how you got on.

So today installed the 1070 and hooked it up to my new dell monitor with DP cable .. no problems at all.. single 8 pin power connection...
Followed some screen settings from tftcentral and it looks great..not tried an ICC profile yet though.
2500k is clocked at 4.2. Just ran a heaven bench, scored 2560 ... 1440p , high, dx11

A couple of times when I've powered pc on, the screen wakes up but goes straight into power saving mode. Removing power from monitor and plugging it back in again solves it but I've not had time to investigate that further..

Overall very happy so far

My PC is in a very bad state at the moment... i5 2500k with no overclock and an R9 290.

I'm wanting to game at 1440p but also feel it's probably not the best time to buy graphics cards with disappponting Vega etc. What you are doing seems like a good solution to tide me by. Which card have you gone with?

My Zotac 1070 mini arrived on Wednesday and its been great so far.
I have a 2500k OC'd to 4.6 and ive not had any issues playing at 1440p so far.
Destiny 2 beta looked stunning on PC , gutted my friends and I chose to all buy the xbox version :-( other games ive tried are Witcher 3 , Rise of the Tomb Raider , Gears 4 and Horizon 3.

Its a lot quieter than i thought it would be too , i was expecting the fans to have to work a bit harder with everything crammed in a small card.
