GeForce GTX 260 - Silly question

Hi,

This is probably a silly question. I have an nvidia 8800 GTS 512mb and i am soon going to get a new 22inch monitor. I want to play new games with the highest quality settings and resolution. If i upgraded to a GeForce GTX 260 would i see a big improvement?

I have 2gb ram and a dual core intel cpu, think 2.13ghz

I'm going for nvidia since i already have one and would not need to worry about drivers.

Thanks

Go for radeon 5770 or 4890. Much better value/features.

Drivers are no reason to stick with nvidia right now. If you are set then just get the cheapest GTX 260 you can find. You will notice a good increase in performance especially if you overclock the card.

Edit: OC the CPU too, assuming its a core 2 its a crime not to!

Any room to O/C your CPU?
Let everyone know your spec. and someone will help (who knows more than me!)

I went from a BFG 8800GTS 640 to a Gainward GTX260 GS last week and in most games I see a 30%-50% improvement. Thats on an E6600 @ 3Ghz. My 3Dmark 06 score jumped from 9000 odd to 13060.

I think even I am CPU limited now on some games and it wasnt as big an improvement as I'd hoped. I suspect I will go Core I7 in the New Year and SLI the card.

you will Definitely see an improvment but as everybody else is saying you really need to overclock that cpu.
I used to run an e8400 with 260 gtx and every time I clocked the cpu up another notch I saw another FPS improvment all the way up to 3.8ghz

i just used CPU-Z, awesome piece of software. i have a Gigabyte 965p-ds3 motherboard. FSB is 1066mhz and bus is 266mhz. My cpu is th 6400 @ 2.13 family 6 model f revision B2, socket 775 LGA. RAM IS DDR2 DRAM FREQ 400MHZ FSB:DRAM 2.3

So if i overclock my cpu what settings should i take it to?

thanks

well assuming you have pc6400 ram then simply change the fsb from 266 to 400 to give 3.2ghz. Most if not all e6400 chips can do this. What cooler are you using?

Hi. I ran the same motherboard as you have with an e6300. Mine was an S3 which i flashed to DS3.

I cant remember off the top of my head, but i just changed the FSB at first to 300x9 and instantly ran it at 2.7ghz. You will see around 3ghz with yours i believe (x10 multiplier??)
