Geforce GTX1180/2080 Speculation thread

Is it me or do all these cards seem to have beefed up cooling compared to pascal? Even the reference cards have beefed cooling. Seems like what i was predicting pre launch. Not on the forum but to my self just because of what i think this gen actually is.

They do, to be fair though the reference cooler had done nothing but hold the cards back in terms of performance. They reached the limits of a single blower fan a while back but still continued to use one. About time they made the change.

Variable rate shading sounds like an improved and slightly different idea to HiAlgo Boost - IIRC the person/people behind it were hired by AMD and worked on Chill. The idea was to lower resolution of the game when movement was detected, from memory in HiAlgos case it was linked to inputs. I remember spinning around fast in Skyrim and having the game render at a lower resolution until I stopped.

It's definitely a cool idea, and from watching that DF video, IMO ray tracing is the least interesting thing - though cool none the less - they've said. It'd be interesting if AMD could use a similar way to detecting fast motion to aid their Chill function.

I ordered that exact same card and have the exact same email. Does this retailer start with s and end with n by any chance?

It was a recent email that I got, only a couple of days ago too, so I suspect it is in date. I guess the delay mostly affecting those who bought founders edition, probably as they gave their available supply to all the reviewers lol.

Yea that's true but i just find it odd how everyone seems to have beefed up the cooling. The 2080ti has two 8 pin connectors too vs the 8+6 last gen. This makes me think that the reference spec is closer to 300watts vs the 250watts last gen. Might be why everyone has beefed up the cooling?

The only competition they really have at the top end is themselves and 7nm which should be next year sometime. They want the 20xx series to have as much time as possible in the marketplace before then. AMD might offer some mid-range competition with Navi but that's a way off yet.

No doubt there is a method to their strategy which only they will be privy to.

That’s my thinking too. I’m assuming that 20XX is almost like a beta (not in a bad way, calm down pre-orderers :p). They’ll leave the mid/bottom end empty to shift old stock (Its not like AMD are murdering that segment of the market), and use the top end to develop and improve the new technologies they’ve laid the groundwork for (banged on about). Two to three SKUs is cheaper to market, package and distribute too.

My guess is that the wait for Nvidia 7nm won’t look anything like what we endured during Pascal.

It all seems really odd. AMD news? Driver optimisation? Eeking out higher clocks? Working with specific developers to improve performance? Like you said, they want these out as fast as possible while people are still hyped enough to drop £1200 on a GPU; the delay is surely for good reason.

seems to be a wee bit faster, check this out

Really need to wait for proper reviews.

I looked at NVidias own performance claims for the 2080 Ti and in the synthetic tests (which can only be run one way) like Time Spy Extreme and Cyan Room my Titan V was quite a bit ahead.

As pointed out above the Titan V is a big overclocker whereas the 2080 Ti probably already close to using all its potential.

All will be revealed when the reviews arrive and we also have plenty of game bench threads where 2080 Ti owners can post their scores.:)
