Just built a new pc with Geil 6400 - when booted up it shows in cpuz and PC wizard as pc5300 - is this right or have I been sent the wrong memory??

Any idea?

No m8,you have the correct memory . Its the spd settings in the memory to make them more compatable with various motherboards. There is a sticker on the memory which tells you the correct timings and voltage they need to run at(4 4 4 12 @ 2.1v ) ps i have the same memory :)

You need to manually adjust the speed in BIOS and up the voltage to 2.1V (standard boot is 1.8V) in order for them to work at the rated speed.

Garyh - any idea where in the BIOS for a DS3 I'd find these options? The intelligent tweaker doesn't seem to give an option

Isn't the option you need called something like VRAM/VDIMM? Should be set at 2.1volts absolute or +0.3 (If the DS3 does it like that) (I think 0.8v is the DS3 stock).

That memory is rated as 0.8v for 5300 only I think, and 2.1 for 6400.

Upon loading the BIOS; press CTRL + F1 (to enable advanced memory settings)

Then go into Advanced settings I think it's called, second or third option down. The settings should be there :)

Set the memory to manual mode

Raise the Memory voltage to +0.3

then change the timings to 4-4-4-12 with the rest on auto and change the memory multiplier to 3.

Jobs a good 'un...

I'm also running PC6400 on a DS3.

Just tried what garyh suggested, and CPU-Z still states I'm running PC5300. However, on changing the mem. multiplier to 3.00, the BIOS freq. reading changed to 800mhz. I'll say that BIOS is much more reliable and that everything's in working order :P.

not tried the bios advanced setting yet - but it's running happily at 3ghz at the moment.

As it replaced an ageing 1800 xp, the change in pace has more than suprised the parents, the only problem being that it now whups my 64 ;-)

Hi All,

I have the same issue with my Asus P5B, I can see where you chnage the cas values and speed the ram at to 800 mhz but can't find any settings to do with the voltage that the RAM uses in the BIOS.

Any ideas? Thank you

Edit, no worries I have found it

Yeah i had the same issues with this RAM on my Asus P5N32-Sli SE deluxe, had to run memory @ 2.3v to get it to run stabble @ 4-4-4-12-20, but after giving it a little extra juice it worked fine. i then later raised the voltage to 2.4v and i can run memory @ 3-3-3-10-20 @ 900mhz :p which is rather sweet :D :D

I really think this is a little bit of a con by the memory manufacturers - I dont see any difference between this and say Intel branding every C2D as an E6700 (because of locked multi's) as they are all capable of such speeds and charging as such - surely the default value of anything is what it should be marketed as ie in this case 5300

Remember with DDR ram we had 2100, 2700 and 3200 ram and if you put 3200 ram in a 2100 chipset or fsb it would automatically lower it to that rate, but if the mobo and chip where set correctly and memory was at default it would go in at 3200 without any voltage or speed adjustment (after all thats what default means)

Now default on new RAM is 5300 even though its branded at 6400?? Just whiffs a bit to my mind and to make matters worse you have to increase voltage etc and adjust timings also to get the branded speed

I agree, I find it odfd that you have to manually adjust settings to get the RAM at the rated speed and for it to appear as PC5300 made me very concerned.

Agreed, in fact it makes a mockery of the whole concept of having SPD data if you have to set things up manually anyway.

The sad thing is that there are probably beginners/novice system builders out there with their memory running slower than it should be. Most people on this forum probably aren't that bothered as they tweak their rigs anyway, but amateurs might not realise, they expect 6400 RAM to run at 6400 speed in a compatible motherboard - a fair assumption in the 21st century.

Tbh any noobs are probably still running their Core 2 Duos at the stock 266 fsb anyway. The Geil pc6400's 'stock' speed of 332 (pc5300) is more than adequate for that.
