Evening,

I'm looking at the following spec to buy over the weekend and was wondering if I could save a bit of money by going for cheaper ram:

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail £94.99
(£111.61) £94.99
(£111.61)
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) £101.99

(£119.84)
Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £69.99

(£82.24)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) £13.99
(£16.44) £13.99
(£16.44)
Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case - No PSU £24.99
(£29.36) £24.99
(£29.36)
Samsung SpinPoint P SP2504C 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM £42.99
(£50.51) £42.99
(£50.51)
Sub Total : £348.94
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.95
Vat : £62.81
Total : £421.70

Or change to this ram:

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC) 84.99

Would I notice any difference with a bit of light overclocking?

Thanks

Go for the cheaper ram, you wont need more than 400mhz, as you won't be going above 400FSB.

The P5N-E SLi is an asynchronous motherboard so you can buy RAM as fast or slow as you like and it'll run it at that speed, the processor speed is irrelevant. I would always recommend you buy the best RAM you can afford. The GeIL looks like good value, but the Crucial is worth every penny if you can stretch to it. It will run significantly faster than it's rated speed and the board will get the very best out of it.

Plus, if it breaks in future, they'll swap it out in 48 hours - guaranteed! Try that with the European (Cellshock), American (Corsair/OCZ), Taiwanese (Team/G.Skill) or Korean (GeIL) based companies and it could take weeks to get your RAM RMA'd.

Slightly more expensive, yes. But worth every penny.

This RAM might only be rated at PC5300, but it'll do much, much, more than that. It's worth seeking it out if OcUK stay out of stock.

Hmmm, hadn't looked at that, but it sounds very interesting. I don't have to get the case or hd (although I could do with them) so might stretch to better ram. Would it make a significant difference in games?

Thanks

No, not really. A very fast HDD would speed up loading times and you'd notice that much more.
